1.9 diesel charge problem..

  Skyline GTR32
hi

first post!

im doing some work to my niece's 1.9 diesel clio at the weekend that i am told has charge issues...

car starts, runs, lights seem to come on ok but when turned off it wont restart with what sounds like a dead battery...(so i am told)

the alternator light is constantly illuminated when engine is running

ill be doing a multimeter check to see what the voltage is when i get there as you would expect but i wanted to check with you guys that there isnt something else i should be looking at....after all i find it odd that the lights are nice and bright when the engine is running if the alternator isnt supplying the correct voltage (amps) but then seems to have a totally dead battery upon restart which indicates that the battery hasnt had a charge

i doubt a dodgy battery would illuminate the alternator light when running? (allthough i am told this is on its last legs too..)

also where would be a good place top buy a new alternator?, im told its just a normal lucas jobbie so i might just put some new bushes in it? if the voltage is low
how much would you expect to pay for a new alternator if i have to do that?

is there any dodgy wires that normally cause the symptoms described?, any suspect relays etc?

any help you can give would be great!!

thanks for reading

regards, brian
