120,000 mile Williams

Is it worth looking at a 120,000 mile Williams as a second car. Obviously this depends on how its been looked after, but if the history is good are the miles a problem. Whar should the service book look like? How many miles will the Willy engine do? What are my options?

Cheers guys

Check out carsurvey.org. There are a couple of reviews on there mentioning 240,000 miles out of a Williams, with the engine finally being killed by a broken cam belt.

Wow.... so if it wasnt for the cam belt it would of kept going!!

Thats pretty bloody good going!!

Id say they are good for 200k anyway!!

my williams engine had done 201k miles before it got rebuilt. and the conditon of it was mint-apart from the snapped cambelt. its now putting out quicker in-gear times in my 19 than a mk1 clio v6...read into that wat u will!lol

ive heard of 3 thats have gone over 220k, do a search for user name Sprint16v he had a williams 3 from new to mega miles and was still fine will the belt snapped, Paul Mitchell bought it and stripped it and the bottom end was fine, remeber they dont rev very much and do tend to be looked after. There ois also a web site where a mechanic re-built a 220k one and its was basicaly fine, very little wear considering.

the shape of the williams engine is more stroker diesel than screamer racer and they therefore wear accordingly, The wear is going to be more significant in the rings/bores then the equivelent 16v for obvious reasons.

And to boot i put my money where my mouth is and bought a williams a few weeks back on 109k, history tells the life of the car and its went to 90k very quick (3-4 years) with renault servicing and belts etc, and from then on its lived a very sedate life.

remeber all parts are basicaly cheap because its from the clio 16v/R19 16v parts bins, only thing to really worry about is the bottom end but as stated above it shouldnt put you off.

How much is he aksing? (if you dont mind me asking)

Very good time of year to be buying mine was a steal at £2800 for a 1995 N williams 3. Investment!!

idealy try and follow it and gget the driver to press it out whilst your checking for smoke - could give an indication of wear in the bores/rings, idealy before its not to warm.

that high mileage williams engine is the one i bought matey(16v - 2.0) off paul mitchell a few months back. bottom end was in mint condition. i stuck in some new rings, bearings and seals. goes like a rocket

yeah, f7p head, gasflowed with kent fast roads. im running hill power stage 2 2litre managment. goes like fcuk, shame about the 20mpg tho...

bottom ends are bomb proof, had the head of my own 16v engine, and low and behold, you can clearly see the original honing marks in the bore, pu there when engine was first assembled almost 10yrs and 90k ago, absolutely no ridge, quite believe these bottom ends will do millenium falcon mileage!

im getting 28ish steady driving on standard williams, was getting better then that with my old moderatly modified williams engined 16v.

any idea of out puit at your spec? Head was a expensive build/ highspec wasnt it? remember talking to you about it before.

was toying with the idea of taking mine to a similar spec but had reservation about how well suited the stage 2 chip would be to my "BenR Spec" head and "Bondy re-grinds" - the alterntive of a custome re-map at £325 puts me off, as does running lean!!

well the head was done by regal automotive a few years back(before i bought the head)- it had 1200quids worth of work dun to it. im running kent cams even tho the hill power chip is specced to run the piper versions. it runs the engine jsut fine, plenty of torque all over the rev range. wheel spins in 3rd even with 17s on. need to get it back down the strip and on a rolling road.

what spec are the cams do you know? they originaly bought for the F7P or specificaly for the F7R bottom end?

sorry for all the questions and thread hijack but its a very similar spec to what i wanted to go for

uv had experience runnign both types of exhaust manifold on a williams engine havnt u? cast 16v manifold and downpipe and the williams tubular one? whcih one perfromed the best?
