172/182 engines interchangeable ?

As I understand it I can put a 172 engine into my 182 using everything standard? The only thing different is the breather plate ? Can this just be swapped with a 182 breather plate?

  dan's cast offs.
nope. either use the upper inlet to match the engine or you can modify upper inlet for the other engine.

I've just fitted a 172 engine in my 182. I fitted the 172 upper inlet on the RS inlet from the 182 engine.

The pipe from the carbon canister is different as on the 172 the fitting is on the end of a pipe which is on the left of the rocker cover as apposed to being on the rear of the upper inlet.

What I done was cut my existing fitting from the carbon canister pipe, cut the pipe, heated it and slid the fitting on and tightly insulating taped it afterwards for good measure.

Yeah well I can’t find a decent 182 engine for the life of me, however 172 engines seem to be really common. I have got my current engine ready to the point where it needs to be lifted out but haven’t got a replacement for it yet.

How did you find putting it back in? Thinking I’m going to have a few cables and plugs I’ve forgotten where they go to !

Easier to bin the carbon canister.

you can get the pipe for the 172 carbon canister and use that. also if you change the ends they are a push fit, seen plenty messed up with heating the pipe.

New pipe is like £30 from Renault. Unless mine needed talked to nicely I couldn’t push it on. Its very possible I didn’t try hard enough however.

What happened your engine?

Going back in was fine. I had to put it in with the ac compressor off. When we got the engine in and turned, I fitted the compressor and the AUX belt. Much easier to work at when the chassis leg isn’t in the road. I noticed with tensioner slackened full the belt wouldn’t slip on. I had to fit the belt as best as possible and turn the water pump with Allen key hole in the middle to feed the belt on whilst holding the tensioner fully backed off.

I didn’t mark any of the connectors. It falls into place once the loom is routed. I was only confused with earth attachments to the gearbox. Thankfully my mates 172 cup was outside to cross reference.

Yes there’s definitely more 172 engines available. Being from NI this narrowed it down for me even more. To post an engine here is £100. There simply isn’t any engines available here. My dad was in England on another trip in the van at the end of July and he managed to collect a 172 engine and bring it home.

I went from 5th to 2nd at about 80mph and it went bang [emoji23]

Yeah I will get my hands on a 172 engine and stuck it in there hopefully soon as planning a trip over to Germany in the new year where I will probably blow it up again [emoji23]

Ouch. Were you intending on 4th?

I done 3rd to 2nd instead of 4th and bent all 8 exhaust valves in a car I had years ago.

Yup my previous car the gearbox felt a bit more spaced out. Went to drop a gear and then had an oh sh*t moment when I realised what I had just done!

I know that feeling!

Get some photos taken as you change the engine and add them to your project thread if you have one.

Good time to do the timing belt and dephaser on the replacement engine before it goes in. I used the Renault manual for torques on everything when reassembling and I would recommend the same. To torque the gearbox bolts you will need a 13mm crows foot.
