Aux belt issues.

I know it’s a pretty easy job to do an aux belt and from my previous non Renault experience it’s easy. However, I just can’t seem to get the aux belt on my ph1 172.

Tried everything, Jubilee clips, using bars to slacken it off, walking it on the crank and still nothing.

Worth mentioning, it’s got all new OE tensioner but crank pulley is new (Engine Dynamics one) and I’m putting a 5K 1665 belt on it due to recommendations by others on the forum.

Any ideas what to do next?

Write down your step by step process. You're loosening the alternator? What's happening with the jubilee? Is it just slipping?

So, the belt was already off to begin with, so I took the top bolt out of the alternator and slackened off the bottom to swing it out towards the front end to get the tensioner out.

Then I tried everything with the tensioner out but didn’t have a good jubilee so put it back in and left it for me to get another jubilee later on.

I got another jubilee that I then tightened it up over the tensioner, it started to compress but it was getting hard to keep turning so my dad gunned it up. Now the spring feels completely compressed but there is still not enough slack for the belt. Then tried to walk it on and that did absolutely nothing, either went on the crank and fell off the water pumps or wouldn’t go on the crank. The alternator is back where it should be at this point.

I find it easiest to put the belt on with the alternator top bolt undone so it flops down to create loads of slack. Then just put the belt round and push the alternator back into place.

Is the belt run def correct?

Yep, the belt routing is right, I’ll have to try having the alternator pushed down, didn’t think to try that as I imagined it would put more tension on that part of the belt.

It just seems to shimmy round on the pulleys as the alternator moves. Just pull all the slack over to that side and it should go. Clearly not the Renault procedure but it’s always worked.

I’m don’t know it would make any difference to how it fits but looking at your first post you’ve said it’s a 5K, I’m sure it should be a 6 rib belt.

Yeah, it’s meant to be a 6pk belt but I was advised to use a 5pk as the 6s can catch on the timing covers if the plastics swells.
