The car is fitted with a really good immobilser which is built into the engine management ECU. It works by reading a transponder chip which is embedded in the car key.
This on its own qualifies as a Thatcham level 2 device.
When the cars are imported they are fitted with an upgrade alarm made by Cobra. This is switched on/off by the Clio's locking controller and provides volumetric detection by ultra sonic sensors mounted on the "A" pillars and door boot and bonnet detection using the cars own switches.
It also has the required battery backed up siren mounted under the scuttle panel.
The alarm and immobilser together provide the Thatcham 1 level.
A lot of people on here have had problems with these alarms.
My Son had a lot of trouble with his. So I removed it and installed a Clifford as a replacement, it has proved to be 100% reliable.
The installation of these "dockside" Cobra units is very poor as they are done to a meet price not a quality standard.
Water gets into the siren and the bonnet contacts fail. The ultrasonics can go out of adjustment easily.
Unfortunately there is no emergency "get you going" option, if it fails, your stuck.
Having said all that, some people have not had any problems at all.
It seems to be luck of the draw.
As an aside, if you lost one of the Renault remotes, its almost cheaper to replace the alarm with a new one than buy a spare key and have it programmed.
