172 Cambelt Change

KDF

  Audi TT Stronic
Just put my car into my local to get the cambelt changed. They just phoned me to say that they couldn't do it requires two special Renault only tools that apparantly renault dont lend out ?

I really dont want to take my car to Renault for a couple reasons.. they local renault dealer here is quite frankly s**t and they will charge a fortune.

Can local garages do the cambelt ? I mean do they have the tools also does anyone know a good garage that can do the job around edinburgh.

Cheers.

My local garage did mine. You do need "special" tools but any "decent" mechanic/engineer can manufacture them.

Yer thats what I thought..

I have phoned another garage that are getting back to me.. didnt think it would be that hard a job TBH.

like whats been said above, you do require the tools, but a decent mechanic, should already have them or being to get hold of/manufacture themselves. dont think that renault have the monopoly by having the tools, coz they aint the only ones to have them. my local garage did mine for me last month.

Managed to get it booked in to a 'proper' garage for friday, they mentioned that you should have the water pump changed at the same time as it can crystilize or leak or somthing ?

That accurate or bull ?

Pics of what ?

Renault don't lend them out?

More like we can't be bothered getting the tools from our tool supplier and we've noticed on Autodata that it's a slightly difficult job in limited space!

Look at the number of engines you can use the tools on. Do you trust a garage that doesn't already have them?

At least you found someone that can do it.

I just had mine done and didn't get a water pump, but they do fail and you'll save in the long run if you do do it while they're in there. It's not astronomical, your call. More preventative maintenance than essential.

Edit: £57.27 on slightly out of date list before VAT for the water pump from Renault. Maybe an extra ten or twenty minutes to fit.

Change it, if it leaks after having the belt done, it will need to come off again to replace the WP

It's run off the aux belt (the water pump) so while it would be a pain, it's not a full new cambelt job.

Sounds like your spot on heh..

The garage, Farrel & Moir are local so normally just use them, its now booked into a really good garage in glenrothes as I trust them 100% !

Thanks for all the info, sounds like your talking from experience. Will definitely get the water pump done at the same time !

Ye, definitely gonna get it changed. I havent had any problems with it or any leaks but it will be worth it in the long run. Cheers for the help !

These are tool borrowed from renault dealer.

  172 cup,s2 rs turbo
the left hand tool is for 1.4 and 1.6. the right hand tool is the cam locking tool for the 2 litre. the centre tool is for locking the cam pulleys to allow you to undo the pulley nuts. On the 172 with the dephasor you need adaptor sprockets to fit the centre tool or you need to grind a large chunk out of the plate so it clears the dephasor when fitted. you also need a crank pin which isnt shown in the pic. Personally wouldnt bother with the water pump as its off the aux belt and they dont seem bad for leaking anyway.

I had mine done a few weeks ago and my garage already had the tools and got them from one of their suppliers.

It's a 5 hour job  (less than 30 mins for a Saxo)

Bits used for the job:
A "Timing Belt Kit" - the parts are

R7701476675 Kit Distribution £123.59 (inc VAT)
R7700106271 Core Plug £7.26 (inc VAT)
R7700274026 Plug £3.20 (Inc VAT)

(Two seals are needed for the back of camshafts because
the originals have to be removed to get tool in) (?)

£134.05 total from the Renault dealer

Just had mine done on Monday, the mechanic had never done a 172 before but had done lagunas before took about 5hrs had the aux belt and pulleys done as well.

As well as the x2 cam plugs you may been a cam bolt it is a stretch bolt that if it measures more them 49.1mm or dsomthing it needs replacing mine got replaced anyway.

You can do them with out the tools ALOT quicker, for the garage to turn the job down is amazing, ive never done a 172/182 but i've done a good few renaults and nearly all the special renault tools can be replaced by a tipex pen and a lever bar ;)
a mate of mine has actually done a belt on a 182 and he said the worst part about the job is actually getting to the belt, once you have all the covers off the belt can be replaced in about 10 minutes
