172 clutch adjustment/replacement?

I only just checked to see if the clutch was cable or hydraulic. Cable, so that's a cheaper replacement/adjustment.

anyone done a guide on cable adjustment?

I think they are self adjusted, but I'm sure someone will know.

You can do, but I would expect the clutch would be gone before then.

A new clutch isn't cheap though, £800ish from Renault

New clutch or cable idealy try cable first as its cheaper.

It shouldn't get to the end though. Check the teeth on the ratched are all there and undamaged.

My car had done 74K when I had my clutch done. It was biting high but not slipping. The old one that was removed still had a bit of life but was pretty shot. The bite point is now much lower and the whole action is much lighter and smoother! It cost me about £350 inc the Valeo clutch! Find a good local garage and get the clutch from GSF. You'll save a fortune

cheers, i get trade on parts and if i can do the clutch on a pug 206 gti then i hope i can do it on my 172.

You cant adjust it but you can reset the adjuster if that makes sense. Clip the cable off the cluth fork and pull it as far as it will go, then sit in the car and press to the floor, then pull it out again as far as it will go and then re-attach to the fork. This will let the adjuster find the best position.

Does anyone know if this really works, i have a 53 plate 172 and the clutch biting point is high but it doesn't slip at all?

Will replacing the cable make a difference, the clutch is quite heavy when i'm in traffic?

Someone has posted on here that the clutch is £800 from Renault fitted, anyone have any ideas on how much the part is on it's own? I would ideally prefer a genuine Renault clutch?

Yes you can reset the adjuster as dave says, they all have a high bite point all of the 3 i've had have all been the same. The only time its every been slightly different was on the 3rd clutch I put in my old 1.6 (don't ask) which was just much lighter and the bite was a little lower. But it was still very nothing nothing nothing nothing BITE. There pretty fecking digital tbh at the best of times, but you get used to it I can still get a decent launch easy enough.

Genuine Valeo clutch was £80 from eurocarparts for my old 1.6. Cable may make a different if its the early design cable without the extra weights on the end, I changed it in both the 1.2 and 1.6 and it made a reasonable difference tbh. I'm getting one for the 172 to fit this weekend, boy that should be fun (although it should be easy).
