172 Cup fuel consumption

My Cup is a daily and has to run into Manchester and back 5 days a week. It’s currently doing 40mpg and I think that’s around an average of 20mph over 1000 miles (i’ll doublecheck on that later as my car is currently being serviced). Since EFI tuned it it’s been running sweet, apart from when my coil pack died. I don’t drive like Tommi Makinen everywhere but I’m still amazed at that fuel consumption level. When I had my first cup over 20 years ago I think that was only getting around 34mpg.

I can get 38mpg from mine on a decent run which is about 420 miles on a full tank so I can get from Folkestone to the Nurburgring and do a couple of laps before needing to refuel 😁

Pretty sure I made it from MCR to the Ring too on one tank, this is with us ending up going the wrong way around the M25 🙄

Can’t remember the MPGeees, but was pretty impressed with the cars economy especially with the speeds we were getting up to on the Autobahn (and through Holland🤐).

I've had the opposite end of the spectrum on ring trips as well, learning the hard way that a Cup has a smaller fuel tank than a normal 172 which meant that I was running on fumes when we got to Calais.
Got financially bummed for a full tank at the motorway services outside the Chunnel exit then got home to Nottingham (200 miles) with the fuel light on 🤣

Does it? That’s news to me.

I thought they all had the same tank which was about the size of a thimble.

I used to average mid 30s in mine. I’d did better MPG than the 1.2.

It’s gone a bit random since it was turbo’d. It claims 50 mpg on the dash but I’ve got a feeling that’s probably a bit wrong.

Start and stop traffic around 24-25, mixed about 30-32 and motorway around 42-44 at 60mph and around 38mpg at like 80mph

I’m always amazed when it comes to going on a longer journey.

Done 420 miles to Wales and back last month, got home having averaged 45mpg over the weekend.

Well............tbh it's not very scientific butI am basing that on the experience on that particular trip, @RichValver and I both filled up to the very top of the filler neck at the same time in Adenau then headed home in a little convoy.
About 60 miles from Calais I was getting a bit nervous at how low the fuel was (1st ever driving trip in a MK2) so got on the walkie talkie and asked him if he had enough fuel to make it & he said yeah plenty to get to the Chunnel.
Soon as we met back up on the train, I asked how much fuel he had & he said just over 1/4 of a tank and I'd just done about 45 miles with the fuel light on 🤷

I’m fairly certain the early 197’s had shocking fuel economy compared to the 1#2’s.
197 poor on fuel in comparison to 172. A lad i know took one on a nurburgring trip with us, and in comparison to our mapped mk2 meg it was terrible on fuel.

40mpg is ok out of a 172. My trophy does 40mpg on a run on 980cc injectors if steady. Modern management and full sequential injection though!
