172 Cup petrol smell on hot days.

When the weather is hot, I get a slight whiff of petrol smell around the filler up area. Am I looking at a problem with the cap itself or something to do with the neck of the filler pipe?

i can’t find much info on this sort from a few threads on here that didn’t resolve anything. Is there a seal that needs changing in the cap or is something not right on the filler neck? Is there some kind of pressure release device fitted either in the cap or the neck that can be changed or adjusted?

TBH I have no idea what a carbon canister is, what it does and where it lives. I have a horrible feeling that i'm going to be told it's a bumper off job whilst wearing just my underpants whilst it's raining.

Everyday is a school day with my car.

I don't think there is a seal on the filler cap itself, but would have to check to be sure lol.

There is a seal on the fuel tank where the pump hanger/float assembly lives (under the back seat). You can get the gasket (7701206096) or the gasket and a new lock ring (7701207449) from pretty much anywhere.

The carbon cannister lives in the front RHS wheel arch. It's literally a plastic catch can full of activated carbon which catches and stores fuel vapor. Then, when your engine runs, it's purged back into the system to be burned off. Best way to access it is remove the front wheel and inner splash guard. Don't need bumper off.
