172 ff spare wheel well

what is supposed to be in here?
I have a 16 inch alloy spare wheel, jacking kit, but is the spare wheel supposed to sit in something or just sit straight on the bodywork?

as did mine. the standard crappy matt got torn up a bit so just popped a round pice or carpet in 2 stop the alloy getting scratched

It goes straight in, put some foam or carpet in there to stop the wheel getting scratched.
