172 gearbox identification

  Clio 172,Vw Bora Tdi
Where do i Have to look so i can see what gearbox I have in my 172 clio.
I just want to see if it's a speedo drive and code on it.
The clio is from 2001 and not a cup.
Thanks

Ok, got it.
Just wanted to know what to look for, as my current one is making some noises.
I think a bearing is on it's way out.
And I was wondering about fitting maybe a 182 box, because of the bolted diff.
I had a circlip pop on a previous 172 that I had.
Thanks again.

The Clio is my track car.
It depends on when my current gearbox goes bang/ starts getting worse.
And depends on what gearbox I get.
Why do you ask?

Well it depends on my budget/the mood of the wife. Lol
And it's either o quaife diff or something else. Or just getting better suspension.
I'll have to see in the following months.

How so?
The PH1 089 has identical ratio`s to the 129, and the same speedo drive, but has a higher final drive ratio, so cruises on the motorway at lower rpm.
The other yet to be proven advantage on track is that with the exception of the full GP Silverstone circuit or Goodwood, is that 5th gear will never get used, removing the possibility of selecting 2nd gear from 5th, when it was meant to be 4th.
Overall, I prefer the 089 I have installed in my PH2.

Mark, @NorthloopCup can convert to bolt up diff if you are prepared to open up the box.

He requires a 129, as it’s a phase 2.
The earbox will also be easier to find.

I expected more steve, really I did

You have missed my point entirely.
The lower final drive ratio on the heavier Ph2 was to maintain the 0-60 time of the Ph1, as it`s replacement could not be seen to be slower.

In the real world, most people do not drive 0-60 standing starts, and many on here, like myself could regain the 0.3 of second by shedding a couple of stone.

My own opinion is that the 129 spoilt the Ph2 by making it too busy, as the 089 just drives better with the higher final drive providing higher speeds in the lower gears, & better roll on acceleration at maximum torque for longer, in addition to the points I made previously.

I suggest you have a extended drive of a Ph1 to see what I mean.

In addition I spent 6 month`s trying to find a good 129 with no joy, all the 172`s being broken on CS last year were 2003, with 130`s.

Anyway, here`s a decent 089, available now.
