172 Heater Problem?

SOmething has just started happening to my heating.

basically the air has gone cold when it is on its warmest setting?

i have checked the water level, the car is not overheating or leaking. But the other day i got in it and it was warm again?

This is happening all the time now, sometimes warm (but not as hot as it should be, only warm) then its cold.

What could this be? Is it that silly fan thing by the interior light? I thought that controlled the air con not the temperature the air is that comes out of the fan?

can someone help, its a mk2 172.

I was thinking air lock, this can cause uneven temps when the hot setting on the heating is selected..

mmmm, not sure what to think. any else have any theorys or solutions, the air is no where as hot as it used to be, shall i buy some rad flush then Gav?

what about the matrix? i had a golf gti ages ago and it went in that and pissed boiling water over me and a mates feet! was about £40 to replace.

anyone?

Rad flush will only really work if you intend to flush the system and a heater matrix should last about 10 years.

Imo its one of these things

1. Air Lock
2. Sticky heater valve

Is the air still cold after the car has reached proper running temp, say after 30 mins or so? could be a dodgy stat, but unlikely

the air is warmish, then cold then warm again. Depends

say i get in the car let it get to running temp, the air might be cool on its hottest setting.

Pull up at a shop or something, start the car again it'll be warmer air than before.

If the head gasket had gone what else would be wrong, the car is running fine to my knowledge. Should i flush it to see what will happen before i take it to Renault?

Its booked in for the MOT and aux belt change next week.
