I use Euro Carparts there unbeatable on new car parts, where abouts are you?

I'm in Berkshire mate, near Reading. I took my car to a local garage my dad knows and got a service for £70 which I thought was reasonable. But only parts I've ever had changed are for cambelt 2yrs ago which came in at £170, so no real idea of price parts if anything goes wrong.

I dont think its all that bad to be honest any dealership is going to be expensive whether its a 1.2 or a 3.0
The window regulator failed on my car and i phones renault and they wanted £202.18 then i phoned Euro carparts and they wanted £83.60.
Thats a testimony to how much of a f**king rip of it really is!

I do them new for £50 + vat
in my experience, i've always found VW much cheaper than i expected.
i had to do a rebuild on the front end of a MK5 Golf, and all the bits and bobs including a new front bumper etc only came out at abt £300 total which i thought was very reasonable.
no experience of renault, but have heard on this forum plenty of horror stories.

£300! Sound damn good. Well I'm dead stuck between a 172 and a GTI T. I'm still at uni, but hopefully with a summer job I'll be able to afford a new car, insurance and the petrol for it, so now just wondering on maintenance.
Guessing a mk4 parts wouldn't be more than a mk5? Esp as there are so many around?

i'm not sure about MK4s, cos i remember my mate who used to work for VW tellin me that MK5 prices are very cheap because VW specifically designed it so that panels, parts etc.. can be replaced very cost effectively.
i dunno if that applies to mk4s or not.
however, a few friends who own VAG cars (seats, skodas etc) often tell me they sometimes order parts from VW because its cheaper than say, Seat!

To be honest mate your not exactly saving me a fortune to take the missus to paris with are you?
I'd get the 172 mate.
I have had both cars and you are getting more car for your money with the 172. Yes the Golf IS a nice car and the build quality is decent but it has a many common faults as the Clio does. Honestly there is so many stupid things which go wrong with them, for example the window dropping into the door is a fun one! The engine and electrics are pretty sound but everything else is just as prone to f**k up as anything else imo.
The 172 is miles better to drive and much more fun. I wouldn't even consider going back to a MK4 unless it was an R32. For something like 5k you would be looking at probably a 6+ year old Golf on high miles - you could get a much better 172 for that money. If you don't have 5k+ to spend on a 1.8t I wouldn't even bother, it will probably be crap/old/high miles.
I've never really had anything done on the 172 but just looking at these forums and what people have paid to have the Clio fixed i'd say the Golf is a bit cheaper to maintain.

Thanks T-Bag. I am inclined towards the 172 atm. Its a bit more in insurance but a decent 172 would cost less than a decent Golf so it'd be about evens. Where I would save money is on new wheels and tyres as the total for 16s on the Clio would be a lot less than 18s on the Golf, and then a remap for the golf to add on. Think might go for a 172 now and maybe a mk5 GTI in a couple of years.
I'm prob only looking to spend around £3500 and there seems to be some choice for 172s with around 60-70k miles, where as a Golf would have 90k-ish, but not many about.
I think it'll be hit and miss if I'll be lucky with a reliable Clio, some have had it bad, others have had no problems at all.
