172 ph2 Caliper carriers

Anyone know if these are a big job to change over?

Just had a major service and was noted that on the near side carrier one of the sliders has seized up. Thought they didn't feel too strong!

Anyway I have my MOT on the 8th which will no doubt fail, so if anyone has any tips etc to help me change them over it would be much appreciated!

Also, if anyone knows where I might be able to pick up some second handers before the weekend:

Thanks in advance

Removing the carriers is pretty much the same job as removing the caliper itself, just 2 more bolts to undo.

If it's just a seize then if you are able to separate the carrier and the caliper, then a good clean up might solve your problems without needing a new part. What's probably going to be critical is whether the rubber gaiters which keep the gunk out are still in good shape. If they aren't then you'll need some new ones.

The carrier bolts also need a higher torque than the caliper bolts when re-tightened something like 90Nm for the carrier and 60Nm for the caliper, but don't take my word on those numbers!

Cheers for the info, so a non spanner monkey like myself should have no worries changing them once I find a set.

Thanks

See if you can de-seize them first and give them a good clean up as said above. Should save you some money.

Yeah, it was Rentech that found the prob during the service and they were trying to free/de-seize it but were worried if they used any more force it may have sheared the slider or something.

If they had a replacement in stock would have really gone to town on it.

I am a bit reluctant to start hanging off a spanner with the cheese Reanult jack though tbh, lol

Well IMO if mike and dave didn't get them free then new ones it is!! I wouldn't chance doing it with the renault jack either as its crap. You need to get a axel stands and if your have enough money a trolley jack. Think halfords are doing a deal on a jack with stands atm.

Yup, if Rentech can't remove it then I'm afraid I don't fancy your chances. Might have already been tried, but you might as well take the whole assembly off the car and have a go separating them on a bench. It should still only be 15mins for a garage to confirm that they can't separate them.

They aren't that rare, since the same calipers are fitted to some Lagunas so scrappy or eBay if you want some low cost replacements.

And no, the renault wheel jack (otherwise known as the widowmaker) isn't up to the job!

lol, thanks for all your help chaps, found some ph1 172 complete calipers/sliders on ebay but not sure if they fit a cup yet, waiting reply from seller.

Otherwise scrappy. Failing that, 90 buck a side from Renault for the carrier and kit, ftl

Brought my halfords jack and stands yesterday.

£23.99 jack. £12.99 Stands.

Good quality.

Im scared now with the 90nm torque on the caliper holders, Im planning on changing my discs myself.

Jack up car, place on stands.
Remove both front wheels
Remove Front caliper, simply by by taking out the 13mm bolt at the top and bottom of the calipers.
Remove brake pads, be carful not to bend shims.
Undo the two 18mm bolts that hold the caliper carrier on.
Refit all parts.
Ensure all bolts are tight.
