172 REMAP done v pleased with it

  Trophy #267
Can happily say I've had my 172 remapped and thoroughly impressed with the way it now behaves.
Was done by a chap i've known for some time and finially got round to meeting him and getting it sorted.
was done by Pete @ http://www.bell-auto-services.co.uk/
Was helpfull and even put up with my annoying questions throughout the process.
Found rev limit (when warm) raised to 7800 RPM, substantially better grunt in midrange and very good MPG (was about 38-40 when playing after reset on return via M1 and A1 with cruise control which was preserved). Also appears to have sured a slight niggle I had with idling. He also checked the system for faults on his OBD system.

Much recommended service if you are in or around the York area.

Thanks !!!

Have you lost out on low down torque or top end?

It should pull a lot better once rolling :)
How long did it all take?

was there about 2 hours in total mainly because his phone kept ringing including a 'test drive' round the block which took me about 3 miles out the way. I find the 5k kick less pronounced but i think its because the pickup is so much better before the cam profile changes.
Wife certainly is whinging at me due to my new found fondness of gently negating roundabouts in 2nd at ~4k b4 accelerating out of them.
On a different note, she alse said it drove better as opposed to me wanting it to and 'thinking' it does as a placebo effect, and she rarely goes beyond 4k.

sounds good, was this done in york in yorkshire? and how much was it if u dont mind me asking?

also you done anything else to the car?

when i get the ££ i plan on a little re-map;)

Unfortunately didnt get a RR done as would have been interesting to see where i stood beforehand.
Was £295 with the freebie OBD check too, only other thing I have to the car is accoustic valve taken out (cant notice difference to drive but is most definitely louder so a :) from me).

Pete was with Paul from RS Tuning when I had my 172 done. It was Paul's very first Clio map so I think they both wanted to see how it performed.

I'm quite sure they have a slight affiliation.

You appear to have a small misapprehension. Its not a Honda VTEC. The cam profile doesn't change.

Anyway, in the clio the cam sits in its dephased state until the required parameters are met. This is above 1450rpm and 800mb manifold pressure. When it is required though, the cam is phased and the cam timing effectively advances 16 degrees, at 6800rpm it is dephased again and power drops off like a stone. No official reason, but my thoughts are that they do it so you guys shift up once there is a loss of acceleration. The reason for that is because the stock pistons just fall apart with prolongned high rpm use.

The 5k kick is the result of a few natural phenomenons within the engine. At 5000-ish rpm VE suddenly reaches a higher %'age and the resultant torque increase gives you that wahey feeling. VE increases due to the cam comming 'on'. This term has nothing to do with VVT and is quite an old term, whereby the reference is to the rpm region that particualr engine/cam combo requires to process the valve timing events efficiently.

My apologies it the cam phasing which alters not the profile, my sentiments were accurate tho...

Ye i've thought of getting a remap on my 172 but wasn't sure if it was worth 300 quid? Do you notice quite a bit of difference

I am sorry, is "REMAP" means reprogram the ECU??
How much does it cost? Does Reno do these service?

Its not 'blimey i can now do 160 and 0-60 in 4.3' but there is definitely a marked improvement, more to be seen with other mods ie induction work & exhausts which im yet to appreciate :)

Technically its altering the fuelling maps to allow more fuel and better timings for combustion. The nearest things Renault did for this officially is the group-n remap which comes as a replacement ecu which also lost you cruise control if you had it.

This remap is a indiviudal tweaking of your existing fuel map(s) with no change to the rest of the ecu (bar the odd rpm limit increase) and is most definitely something which Renault would frown upon and class as warranty voiding. However, they could see its been done but would only know if they were looking.
