172 to 200bhp

I want to get my 172 (mk1) to 200 bhp, whats the cheapest and easyiest way to do it?

Is anyones 172 pushing the 200+ mark?

quite a few knocking on the door of and pushing over 200bhp

The best means to it is a soddingly large bore exhaust, 63-65mm.....they dont like back pressure at all these engines. Modifications to the inlet manifold reap the largest reward from a single mod as this is the most restrictive factor. A filter setup like the maxogen or the new K&N remote filter setup, which looks quite nice.

Adding cams will help, but the std ones are technically capable of over 200bhp on their own. But with the restrictive inlet manifold itll help hold VE at a beneficial level at higher rpms, thus making it seem like they make more power.

which will save you mega bucks, as labour is the killer.

Youll need special tools to do a cambelt/cam/head swap change though.

And i wouldnt reccomend trying to modify the manifold, as its quite easy to screw up.

Why is everyone so obsessed with 200bhp,it doesnt mean anytrhing,Ian at europarts who tune r5s always said the same he would have a car in take it on road test and it would be rapid then put it on the rollers and it would get 200bhp.Then hed get others in that wouldnt feel nothing special on road test then it would get 290bhp on the rollers

What special tools do you need?

cam locking, pulley locking, TDC setting (if you arent referencing from the marker on the flywheel i.e. gearbox isnt on).

With the exception of power delivery and a usable torque graph, it would have to be a really really badly built/designed engine to make 290bhp and not be faster than a 200bhp one....unless its capacity (as such in the 5 gt) means that to make such a high output from a poor engine you will have to concentrate on high end efficiency, and TBH......ive not seen any development into the 5gt engine of anything but more boost. Engine efficiency of the 5gt is poor.

200bhp from a modern multivalve engine such as the 172s isnt hard, and one making say 220bhp will be faster at all points than one making 180-200bhp. But you will reach a point where a 2ltr 16v making 270-290bhp NA will be slower than a 200bhp version @ an rpm level where the torque from the high output engine will just not be as high as that of the 200bhp engine....this will be lower rpm regions though, and pretty useless when your trying to go fast.

Ben are you talking about the K&N Gen II?... Or something else?

The one that has a nice long pipe down to where the butterfly solenoid is for the OE airbox/where the horn is? Aye Im thinking of selling the Maxogen to get this kit, just to try it out and free up a lil bit of cash :O)

yup, that one.

Principal design is good, but the only worry is picking up air from a lower pressure area, loosing bhp.

Nothing that cant be fixed though.

Think you mean the Typhoon I have ?

And afriad it MK1 172s only

Will be at RR day on sat for everyone to have a look at

thats the one.

WHy MK1s only, apart from the TB difference?

Does the routing not suit the phase 2 or 182s?

Eskiisbest we convoying over to the RR day or what?!

Surely you mean just 172/182s at the moment?... You better do! I want one!

AngelWorks, BenRs business specialises in this kind of work mate....i had my inlet manifold done by him and along with other mods mine made approximately 196bhp

I only used that as an extreme example what im getting at is people concerntrate on 200bhp to much, mine was 193 on the rollers doesnt mean a 200bhp would slaughter mine,

I seen a 172 on the rollers with a 2.5 inch straight through exhaust with no cat and it was losing power i know everyones gonna disagree with me but it was losing power due to no back pressure

No clue about engine myself but the bloke said something to do with it being cable throttle??? and yeah the pipe config doesnt fit and there is no plan to design one until it comes into the R&D yearly projects which might be next year but might not. So sorry everyone else

Yes to convoy what times it kicking off and do you know the way there??

Have you spoken to the Clio Cup teams (details from http://www.renaultsport.co.ukwww.renaultsport.co.uk) they will happily do mods for you and their labour costs arent all that high!

Even the parts that they could get hold of from Rsport are not restrictingly expensive. Have a look at http://www.renault-sport.com/en/boutique/catalogue/http://www.renault-sport.com/en/boutique/catalogue/http://www.renault-sport.com for more info.
Only problem is that they race std engines, in terms of experience with modifying the engine, their experience is limited, and tbh......ive not been overly impressed with many outfits.

Yup, very true....200bhp sounds much higher than 199.

The only thing that is standard on a Cup race engine is the Cylinder block! The induction & inlet manifold are completely different as is the exhaust especially at the point where it leaves the engine and enters the main exhaust. Then not to mention the ECU, air sensors etc...

My thoughts to get the best results is to first get it breathing better (air in and out) then to get a re-map to make max use of this. Not only will BHP increase but so will Torque which is actually more important. A well sorted exhaust system will particularly help here.

The cup race engine uses a different management system aswell to a 172/182,it uses a magnetti marreli system

I suppose the new clio will be 200bhp just like the clio 172 is 172 bhp i think not

Really?

The engine is a stock standard item with, stock inlet manifold, stock crank, stock pistons, stock rods, stock exhaust manifold (was the 172 now the 182 item). The only difference is that a straight peice of tube is used to the air filter. The exhaust is an orbisoud unit with a cat and isnt the be all and end all of exhausts. The Magneti Marelli ECU is an ignition component only, the stock ECU still runs the engine abiet with a slightly different map.

They only thing they do is make sure each engine makes the same power, i really wouldnt get hung up or waste any pennies on clio cup racer engine parts.

it doesnt use the same management system as a 172/182, its magnett marrelli
