172 tuning

Car  E90 320d M Sport
Hi there,

I was just wondering what mods - power gains you can do/get out of a 172?

I take it RStuner is a must, this looks very interesting.

What else is out there for sensible money and what gains do they produce?

RS Tuner
Matched Inlets £160ish 4-5bhp
IK - £150ish +
Exhaust - £350ish +
Decat - £100ish

So matched inlets is the best bet although it makes not much of an improvement?

How about induction/air filters?

ITG MAxogen is the best (IMO) but a £300 quid again it's not worth it.

Just get a decent exhaust and decat. The noise makes it more fun.

Or some decent lines and pads. And the rest on tution/track days/actual experience. If that's your bag of babies.

Stock brakes are more than up to the job for road use. Your not going to be out braking anyone on the road unless your being a naughty street racer lol and in anycase, if its a slightly faster car your racing you'll still get soiled come the straights ;)

Same goes for coilovers. Overkill for the road. Be bouncing all over the shop and actually make you slower if anything unless your local roads are glass smooth !!

Track use different kettle of fish.

Its not worth tuning these up if your a numbers man ;) On paper bhp vs the pound dosent do them any justice - on the road different story.

^^

well said, apart from the coilover comment. If you can spring for a good enough set that will actually react on a bumpy surface, like h&r's, you will make the car faster.

the clio is about point to point speed, not straight line speed. Improvements are best made to driveabilty

Its the height drop thats the biggest prob. Majority of folk buy a average to good kit, set it up roughly and only once, slam the thing right down then ride about doing 90 round roundabouts which is fine but throw in a cross country point and squirt blast with a average driver on the average UK road (just about 99% of folk lol) and will the 5 - 900 quid coilovers really be money well spent in terms of performance 'gains' over stock or a springs and shock package?- im not so sure. Track, yes.

Cams plus other bolt ons might cost a fair old whack but although the gains in terms of bhp are low vs the price, if the car is well set up it will or certainly should be punching well above its weight and class.

Just get a remap, exhaust with a decat and a panel filter. :)

The exhuast will eventually fall off so upgrading it will be a wise choice. :)

IMO brakes and suspension first as already said.

However I do disagree with people saying not to tune the engine. Yes your not going to get a huge increase in power for your money but theres allot of power and torque to be gained in the midrange which is where the stock engine is lacking. Unless you drive around above 4500rpm all day the stock engine is a bit weak lower down.

You dont need to spend thousands but a few simple mods such as matched inlets, decat and a remap can really help. If noise floats your boat then an exhuast and induction setup can help a little.

Where are you in the mids? I can take you out in mine, coilovers and better brakes. Coilover wise, AST, KW, H&R or Bilstein. Brakes are ~ £200 to get decent, only bother with the fronts, the rears don't do much work.
