182 at 100k

  Focus rs
Looking at getting myself a 182 to use as my daily, I want a FF version for the creature comforts and the xenons in the dark nights.
Ideally I want a silver car but any will do at the right price. I've seen a car that looks ok but has done 100k I'd assume it's had the belts and pulleys done but what are the belt change intervals?
What else should I look for at that kind of age?
Cheers

TLC on these really does negate a lot of the 'issues' you'd expect with high mileage. What's the age of the 182 by the way?

The key ones to look out for are the auxiliary belts (every 36,000 iirc?) and the cambelt at every 60,000. The former has the potential to take out the latter if it goes, so it's often a wise investment to get both belts done when it comes to cambelt replacement time.

The cam requires a special locking tool when the cambelt gets replaced. Pretty much all the specialists on here have that tool and have done umpteen cambelt replacements in the past. Hence these guys are highly recommended - put another way, my 182 has recently had its 120k service, with cambelt and aux belt kit - and it's only ever been serviced once at a Renault dealership! :) Plan to look at having the dephaser kit replaced sometime in the near future as well.

Common (though not necessarily typical) issues of a car with that mileage..... the alternator might go soon - which is upwards of £600 to replace if you go to a dealership. There are different models of alternator too, so it's worth getting them to check.

Rear bearings groan and drone when they are getting tired - much more cost effective to buy them with new rear brake discs as the bearings are already pressed into them. Original Renault OEM discs are more than adequate for daily driving. It's highly unlikely you'll have the original backbox to the exhaust - which is a good thing as the OEM one is heavy, quiet and made of cheese. The exhaust mounts aren't the best as it's common for the tailpipes to be slightly sagging or dipping to one side.

There's plenty of other things too that I haven't mentioned too! ;)

Cambelt is 72k or 5 years, so it should definitely have been done by now. 100k is nothing these days on most cars. Keep on top of the maintenance and like most cars it will go on for double that.

cheers for the comments guys I'm very surprised that nobody has designed a thin plate to block off the cambelt so that if the aux belt does snap it doesn't affect the cambelt.

Settling for one thats 'okay' doesn't really come into it when you consider there are hundreds for sale all over the place!

as above, buyers market so should be able to find a good one for your budget (whatever it may be) if you shop about

if the belts are serviced as they should be there is no need for a 'plate' hence no ones ever bothered!

Cambelt is definetly 72k or 5 yrs. I think aux belt is same too. Make sure if you have one done to have it done with the correct tools! Its as important for the car as breathing is for you!

Cambelt is correct. Aux belt on these is 36k. Bit of a debate between 3 years and 5 years though. I change mine at 3.
