182 Coughing :(

Wasnt long before i had a problem lol

Started car earlier fine - drove it for about 2 mins then i accelarated a little to get a bit of power out of it then the engine light started flashing lol, its been on for ages due to decat anyway but theres no power in it

but anyway the exhaust is popping and banging and im getting a very lumpy noise from it so im assuming its chucking unburnt fuel into the exhaust

I was thinking either spark plugs, leads, or the coilpack

Any opinions? I took the plenum off to see if i could smell the one thats not firing but didnt really work lol (weird but i thought it be worth a shot!!)

I will test the plugs tommrow to see which 1 isnt firing just wondered if this had happened to anyone or similar?

Do you think itl be lambda related though if its doing it all the time? its doing it on and off very first then it starts its popping and banging regime. shall i do the old unplug a wire and see if it makes a difference jobby?

could be a dodgy injector on its way out. if you can smell a lot of unleaded or it looks like its leaking from exhaust then thats probably the problem

Can smell a s**t load of fuel going into the exhaust i will check them aswell :) thanks

first on my list is to make sure the plugs is firing

Anyone got the firing order for a 182? is it

The marker numbers on the leads/coilpack: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4
The actual firing order: 1 - 3 - 4 - 2

Thanks

I think its the cylinder that is nearest to the battery that isnt igniting the mix as the plug was greasy as opposed to the others that were dry

I had a mis fire on my old 172 and I had to have a new coil pack, plugs, leads and new injector, and that sorted it.

I dont know why people recommend checking lamda sensors on here so often, in my experience ive never known a lambda to even come close to making any of the above described symptoms.

As said, plugs, injectors, leads and coil pack etc.

Done some more investigation...

I have wire brushed all four plugs and took it for a blast - seems to have made a difference!! but when the car exceeds 3500-4000 oh gawd its back again EML starts flashing but stops when the engine speed goes down. Maybe a faulty plug im not sure i have held them all against the bodywork while chugging the motor and they are all sparking as far as i can tell

Plugs are original from 2004 cars done 29,000 miles maybe i will order some more in

One of the plugs was noticable darker than the other 3 so im sure the mixture isnt getting ignited

It has never missfired before and just started doing it now, so yes i think we can narrow it down to either Plugs, Wires, or coilpack, but which one!?

Thanks - yeah i know what you mean. bloody intermitent faults are so hard diagnose gunna do some more investigating and see how it goes

Closer inspection plug 1 or 2 are arcing(shorting) on the body somewhere i can hear it tap tap tap tap... Gunna put some insulating tape over the leads to see if this works as a temporary measure to confirm that it is the leads! will let you all know

FULL POWER RESTORED :D

taped up all the HT leads with electrical tape which has done the trick. Took it for as blip and its all sorted running as good as it was before

Now to fix it properly im gunna need some new leads ideally... Whats the going rate these days?

ps will electrical tape melt lol? iv taped up the whole plug end of it. i dunno how hot the head gets?

Hmmm...

Coil pack (the 182 has one big coil pack, as opposed to four small ones). Mine went on me @ around 60k.

Check spark plugs too (especially if you've got a clean engine - water can find its way down into where they live, and it doesn't take long for them to corrode). The threads are very weak (my car kept spitting out the plug on cylinder 3 every 20k or so), so be careful.

Check leads etc too... (don't forget what order they're in).

I was gunna change the plugs at the 36k service i didnt realise that they could last to 72k.. I gave them a wire brushing and visually they look fine. It does ideally need some new leads but as and when really. The coilpack i think is okay. The only reason i could tell it was the leads is because i heard it popping on the head.

Whilst your're in thre, give your plugs a tighten-up anyway just in case.

One of mine partially popped out, making it a bit lumpy as you can imagine.
