182 Driving Style

Hi all,

Had my 182 which has got cup suspension for a few weeks now and just wanted to get your opinions on what is the best way to drive a 182 quickley through the twisties! :)

To be honest with you im not as impressed with the handling of the 182 as i thought i would be....my last car was a mk1 golf gti - which was a little dodgy on the limit (as most cars are!!) but driving that car quickly was a doddle!

The gripe that i have with the clio is that there is still too much body roll even with the cup suspension. I have found that when you come into a corner the car only feels stable when you are accelerating around the bend. Another thing is that even when you are going reasonably quickley (just a little faster then normal crusing) round a bend with your foot off the gas the car gets a little light at the back, which is not confidence inspiring!

Does anyone agree with me on this or do i just need to change my driving style??

FWD+foot off the gas in a bend=spin in most high powered FWD cars. Eibach springs will sort out your body roll problem.

you should never come off the gas in any FWD car when going round corners - the 182 seems really sensitive to this; best bet is to keep the pedal to the metal!

Are you sure you dont mean RWD?!? as the arse end will overtake the front. on a FWD car comming off the power makes the nose tuck in tighter.

By staying on the power you maintain a better driving position and control through powering the car round the corner, this is differnent to accelerating around a corner.

Keeping power on in corners and not accelerating round them make the cars weight spread evenly across the car instead of transfuring it all over the front left/right wheel stressing the suspension and causing "Tri-Podding" as is caused through coasting or accelerating

i find the handling superb in my 182 equally as good if not better than the 2 205 GTIs i had and my old valver.

i really cant see why so meny people seem to have doubts about the handling who clam to own a cupd 182, also maybe because you used to owna golf you are now entering the corners at a MUCH higher speed and going round them to fast and dont actually realise

Yes am aware that by coming off the power in a FWD nose will usually pull in tighter - but when in high speed bends you dont want to be coming off the power too quick (esp. in a Clio!) - much better to balance the car with a bit of throttle after your braking point and then nail it at the apex :)

Learned from 15+ Jonathan Palmer trackdays!

The Clio generates a good amount of grip, so the body will roll. People with slicks would get this even more..

Cars like the the 182 beg you to chuck it about, which is great fun but when you get in a more delicate car youd probably bin it. Smooth driving is the key.
