182 Missfire

  LY R26 #288
Well second day of owning a clio and the problems start lol.

Basically developed a missfire when under load say at 1500 or 2k revs in higher gears as you accelerate it stutters, also when idling if you hit the throttle a bit lively it stutters before it picks up. This is when at normal running temp.

this has only just started. The car has got a slight blow in the exhaust in the middle section somewhere, but it had that when i got the car 2 days ago and it drove perfectly.

any help will be apreciated.

I've done 300 miles in it this weekend, and i havent exactly thrashed the granny out of it.

Forgot to mention that the idle seems quiet lumpy too.

Looks like this isnt very serious. Just left my mates, it was stone cold. Starts lovely and drives fine and then the temp gauge reached about a quarter then it started missing quiet badly under low down revs, the engine warning light started flashing so i pulled over, switched the car off then back on and it drove faultlessly home.

Possible dodgy lambda reading? I presume lambdas only start feeding the ecu with data after they get warmed up?. Maybe it is connected with the blow.

Edit. I just checked for a fault code using the trip computer thing and it came up with J, according to this site thats an injection problem.

I had something similar to this, it turned out to be the ht leads which were shorting onto the engine.

Was it just a "J" or was it "JCO_" or "JCC_"?

A "J" being displayed on the clocksets LCD screen when put in to self diagnostic mode merely denotes there has, at some point, been an "issue" with the fuel tank sender circuit. This fault could simply be low voltage for a while or even the multiplug being disconnected when the power was on.

As above, always check the basics first such as obvious visable faults with wiring and associated connections. The coil to plug leads are also a consumable item afterall and don't last forever so need looking over to for faults as aftermarket units are known to melt and eventually arc out to the covers and engine bracketry. To me though this missfire as you describe it, as it only happen under load and at specific low engine speeds, is most likely going to be either a MAP, HO2 or CTS related problem but a diagnostic live data session will confirm or deny this.

It wouldn't hurt to check the plug wells also before going for diagnostics to confirm/deny the pressence of water/oil in them as this is another common missfire causing problem that builds over time.

Thanks for the info Mick. It displayed just a J on its own. Well I havent tried it today to see if it still has the problem. But I shall reset the code (i beleive i can do that by pressing the trip reset button whilst displaying the code). By the way are these K-tec code readers any good? I'm thinking of getting one.

They are what they are mate - To me they're rubbish but i've got a UK registered Clip and some other SPX & Pico bits in my box of toys but to the DIYer they're okay and a must have for your tool box. Just don't expect it to do anything semi-serious even on systems such as SRS, ABS, UCH, ESP, Etc as it'll only do the Engine side of code reading and I don't know if it'll do live data or not.

I've just been out in it again, no problem starting or when cold. Once upto temp it would drive fine, then start missfiring for a while under load then drive fine again. its very intermittent.

It may be coincidence but this problem arrose the same day I removed my washer bottle to fix the motors. Unless water has got somewhere it shouldnt. Maybe around the coils as their at the back of the engine near where I was messing around with the washer bottle.

It can either be as mentioned above but it can also be a faulty injector....

I had the same problem and it was very intermittent then one day it did it every time I drove the car. The car felt like it was getting held back and then let go, sounded very similar to a scooby and rumbled like hell. Turned out my injector No.3 was faulty and over time it got more and more blocked up....new one of those and the car was great again.

As for wanting to get a diagnostics tool....pay a little more and get a RS Tuner kit mate as they read lots of faults and actually tell you what the code is and lets you delete them. Allows you to do a few other things as well :)

thanks for all the advice, i'm gonna have a look over the weekend, if i can't find the problem, i might take it to rentech to get it plugged in, dont want to replace things that aren't broken

I unplugged the o2 sensor just to see if it played up and it was much better so changed the o2 and all was well :)

i haven't really got time at the moment to investigate, so i booked it into ems in littlehampton, the guy is an ex renault mech, so hopefully it'll be sorted tomorrow

no i'm sure its not serious, one minute it drives perfectly the next its crap, maybe a coil dying or somethin! My 182 is metallic blue think its called arctic blue? Anyway ems specialise in electronics and engine management so they know their stuff

I will keep an eye out for it then there is a silver one that does the littlehamption route thought might have been you ?

nope mines blue and tho reg ends in jza, i have been working in chi recently but been getting picked up so you wont have seen me yet mate.

On another note the garage rung me earlier, apparently the leads were the problem, their waiting for them to come in and it should be fixed tomorrow, 50 quid for the leads
