182 OBDII protocol?

What is the OBDII protocol to talk to the 182/172?

I have a VI unit (I know they 'dont work', but I have a plan ) which can do the main comms. It gets some data out but stops the dash from working and sets a few warning lights on lol.

I want to know what the comms protocol is so that I can force it to run on the right one.
