182 PROBLEMS - AT LAST!!!

  Mondeo STTDCI

Right well I have a list for Renault Im gonna try and get it into Toomeys next week.

1) Knock when lifting off in 1st and 2nd. This being the engine top mount?

2) Corrosion on the top of my tail pipes. Only just started but cant afford aftermarket so I want the tips replacing. Is this a fairly easy job?

3) Flickering lights on the dash! I get the STOP Light and the (!) light (NOTE: - No Serv light). Usually when I am going fairly fast on an A road or a slip road but certainly not anywhere the limit with regards to ESP stepping in. ANYONE have any idea what this one is? Would be hard to recreate only happens now and again and the lights flicker off a few seconds later.

Im SURE my brake fluid is ok but Ill check. It cant be pads as its only done 7k motorway miles!

how often do you clean your pipes? I try and wipe then ends if ive driven through crap, especially with the salt this time of the year.

So they arnt stainless steel then?

IS a chrome polish bad for it, is it just better to wipe it with water?

I clean em only when I clean the car. And then only with car shampoo never bothered to do anything else. No matter how long I spend on soaping and sponging em the rust dont come off.

They are stainless, but probably a poor grade of steel. I use mequires metal polish on mine always makes them come up shinney.

Try a brillo pad if it comes off then its not rust! I get that from time to time on my custon exhaust but it just comes off. Just a build off of all the crap on the roads at this time of year.

I would have thought that that bit would be stainless steal so it wont rust anyway!

wouldnt of thought rust on the pipes would be covered under warrenty.

COURSE IT IS ITS 4 MONTHS OLD!!!

yes but normal wear and tear isnt covered, that could be considered normal wear and tear. And to be honest i dont know what your worrying about a decent polish will have them looking like new.

i wouldnt use a brillo pad on it, that will scratch it to bits, i would use a meatal polish on it, then i would use a protector on it, or at least use a bit of wax on it

Agree on the brillo pad point above. Will whack a bit of Mer on and see if it works. If not Ill have nice new tips!

1, This can be easily fixed yourself and unlike Renault you wont damage the car in the process and you will actually fix it instead of making it worse.

2, I too thought they were stainless so I am not sure it is rust. I wash my exhausts once a week when I do the car and then spray them with WD40 before wiping them off with a cloth.

3, Cant help you.

Hispasm, right I know mines only a 1.2 16v, but I had the flickering problem you had and the following was wrong with mine, and problem was brake fluid low.

use some autosol metal paste on the pipes it will bring them up like new, i used it to clean my bike exhaust when i sold it to get rid of the dis-colour from heat and they were shiny silver when i finished. only costs a couple of quid and it last for ages :D

Right, I will sort the pipes myself!!!

As for the flickering lights, I went down to Halfords and for a tenner got I think 500ml of Castrol Super Dot 4.

I then decided it was a good idea if I had checked to see if I ACTUALLY needed it after the purchase. Anyway, got home, checked the manual to try and find the reservoir. After a bit of head scratching (the manual is WRONG!!!) I took off the cover. Bit more head scratching (it WAS dark) I spotted it.

Was indeed a bit low so topped up. Wont know until I do my work run tomoz but I think its sorted.

As for modding the mount myself...I cant be bothered. I dont mind doing maitenance stuff but I dont really wanna be taking tools to a brand new car. I will let them do the Renault thing. If it doesnt work/or if it causes future problems at least I can start to build a record of it.

Use a brillo pad if it comes off fine, if not, take it back as s/s aint meant to rust!!.

The brillo pad wont scratch/damage them if they are s/s

the brillo pad will scratch it , even if it is stainless steel, and stainless steel can indeed get surface rust (depending on the quality etc)

May be worth getting them to check the coil spring on the suspension. Its not very common but somethimes the spring end splits. Either way Mr Va-Va-Voom will pay for a replacement being its under warrently. Or if not that it will be the rubber tops on the suspension (just under the bonet) for sure.

If it was a top mount it would do it in all gears. The reason I say about the springs is that the cars centre of gravity changes really wide as first and second are rapid and geared to push it off the line. Youll find in 1, 2 the car on full pedal at the back will go down several inches so this is when the spings etc get the most beating, 3&4 not so much and 5 gear not even noticable.

Every Little Helps!

I would have thought that was scientifically impossible. Any surface rust will be contamination that has attached itself to the surface of the metal and rusted.

I used to work near Swan Hunters and I always thought my car was rusting because of all the metal in the air that found a new home on my car.
