182 Purchase

  182
Hi all,

First post, so bear with me.

I've decided to get my mitts on a 182 & I'm currently trying to locate a decent example & in the process stumped across this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-RENA...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649

I hoped some of the many experts here might be able to give me an indication as to their thoughts on this car/listing as it looks pretty solid.

Any thoughts welcomed, I'd need to travel quite a distance to collect it so want to be certain.

The one caveat I would add is that the belts do not appear to have been changed by a specialist however, the seller assures me the car runs well (has had several previously) & given that the belts were done in 2015, surely any issues would have arisen by now?

Thanks in advance or any replies/assistance.

Looks a tidy example from the pics . Nothing major on previous MOT's , my only concern would be the last advisory of "Nearside Front Steering rack gaiter deteriorated " , don't know if that would be an issue in the future. Offer him £2500 .
And its " Arctic " :tonguewink:

Very overpriced in my opinion. Can get 197's for £3k now.

I'd prefer to buy off a member because 9 times out of 10, there's a project thread on here with all the history you need to see!

Lot of money for a completely standard car. If your going to mod it at all I'd say it's not the best car to buy. If you want a standard car to keep as is and make mint then get haggling, otherwise I'd be shopping on here.

I did ask about this & it is to be rectified I believe.

Heh. Thanks :).

Thanks for your your thoughts. I think that the price is what I'm most unsure of. Having been lurking for a while I think I'm happy with the condition/history, which has been backed up by comments here, but it does seem pricy, more so given that I will travelling a considerable distance to collect it.

I would very much like to purchase from a member, but they don't seem to come up all that often in the classifieds. It's part of the reason I signed/paid up.

A theme is arising. I guess the price probably reflects the fact that the seller is a trader, they often seem overpriced via trade (not always, but often).

I can't get the price much lower than than the listed price..... I guess my concerns are being hardened. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

It's a bit of a lottery when it comes to price and condition on 1*2's.
I've seen posts were somebody has picked up a bargain literrally round the corner from their house . Then I've seen posts were they've had to travel the length and breadth of the country to find the one they want .
Likewise with condition . One persons idea of Mint , perfect or good condition isn't always another persons idea . I know , I've been there and done that many moons ago only to be dissapointed in the condition of the car.
I get it when people say buy off CS as it'll be a well looked after example by an enthusiast . Even if you were to look at cars on CS , you might be in the same situation were you have to travel some distance, and there aren't always that many for sale on here anyway. I've also seen posts were people have picked up a 1*2 cheap then literally can't afford to maintain it properly . Baring in mind the age of the cars now , they will at some point want some cash throwing at them to maintain them .
Personally . I don't think the seller is a proper trader . He looks like a guy who's just selling a handful of cars to make a few quid. That's going off the pics and the way the adverts are wriiten .

Sorry for the long winded post . I was just offering my opinion .
Good luck with your search.

It's certainly a lottery!

I agree it's probably unfair to consider the seller a trader per se, but they certainly appear to be buying & selling cars on at what I presume is a profit.

Thanks again for your thoughts, they are welcomed given my relative lack of experience in the world of Renaultsport Clio's.

You have a colour preference ? Obviously that's going to limit you . Where are you based and what's your budget ?

Also if a car you want to go see is along journey away try to get lots of detail pics sent first and ask for proof of history and the belts being done. I drove an hour to look at one that looked good in the pics and had a huge history file but had numerous cosmetic issue's when I got there, from cracked bumper to dented door frame!
Patience is probably a good tactic to employ.

I think that's s nice car and look like it's been well looked after.
Sadly, it's about £5-700 overpriced.
He's clearly a driveway trader so you'll have to cover his profit but you'll get none of the back up should it suddenly blow up 2 weeks down the line that you would get from a proper dealer.

Right car, wrong seller. Imo.

I don't have a huge preference in terms of colour.

In order, probably - Silver, Black, Arctic Blue (I understand the black/gold variant is a different paint finish? How is this in the flesh?)

I'm in Edinburgh, so basically miles away unless the car is in Scotland, but I'm happy to travel for the right car.

Budget, ideally, is around the £2k mark. I'm after a fairly standard example, ideally with only the exhaust replaced (for a quietish, non-too lairy example) given their propensity to fall to bits.

Excellent points. I have been pushing on the belt proof for any car I've enquired about, I guess there is always a danger that it doesn't meet your expectations in the flesh.

I'm doing my best on the patience front!

That's the conclusion I'm headed towards to be honest, particularly in light of the distance for collection.

Ahhhhhh right . I see . You're probably going to be a long way from most that are for sale .
Black Gold has a Gold/Bronze shimmer to it under the Black itself. Silvers probably the most common colour that you'll come across .
Also try and get good interior pics as there can be some very untidy examples with worn bolsters , the infamous melted steering wheel etc .....
The one you posted actually doesn't look bad inside from what I can see . There does appear to be a small mark on the drivers seat bolster . The steering which looks to be in very good condition .

Tell me about it! Hence willingness to travel (would do anyway but almost necessary given my location).

I see. Is it obvious, or subtle? Perhaps Google is my friend here.

Yeah, I have compiled a list of things to ask/check when enquiring, thanks to the plethora of info available on the site, & if they are satisfied I move onto requesting heaps of photos too. Thanks for pointing out a couple of other things to look out for (bolsters etc).

Silver and black gold are reportedly the least sought after colours so keep that in mind. £2k should easily get you one in good condition. The gold flecks are only really visible in bright sunlight but when it pops it's very nice.
I hate to say this, but if you're on Facebook join clio sport owners club (CSOC) as there's usually ones for sale daily. Just don't spend too long reading all the s**t on there!

Noted (I was under that impression), Good to know on the black/gold, not too in your face it would seem.

CSOC joined. The 'discussion' is at times rather interesting but looks to be a regular cycle of cars for sale so thanks for highlighting it.

Good luck with the hunt.
I'm in the same boat as you hunting but slightly less budget.

If you see anything that's miles away from you let me know, your the top of the country and I'm down in the middle :)

You should negotiate £500 off the asking price for the way in which the advert has been written (my eyes!).

From the images at least, it appears to have been well cared for & history of cambelt changes (including who carried out the work) is very important, but the price is steep. Personally I'd keep shopping

Looking on ebay , there seem to quite a few 182's £2.5-3k and upwards . I don't know if the prices have stared to rise lately or what ?

As above, I personally wouldn't want something with a different engine in unless it was cheap. Nice low owners though but the engine would put me off.

Thanks both, agree on the engine concerns, particularly given the listed price even though it looks like a good example.

First priced ok? Doesn't seem unreasonable but always happier paying less!

Tbh ref the engine. He's being honest, plenty of others wouldn't be.

Still I'd opt for the top if needed.

2200 would be its money. Yeah has the owners but that's about it.

Have you noticed the location mate?

I'm sure I read you was in edinborough?
That would be 450ish miles for You? I'd be wanting some serious info and close up pics etc to do a journey like that and would need to be exacltly what you want haha
