call me stupid, but is this ok, to go up from 195/45/16 to 205/45/16 on 172 alloys? Is the width difference worth it for the price difference?

yeah.
they will be fine. It's a 7j rim.

and well worth it.

i have Turinis on my 172 and run 205/45 Michelin PE2's

AVOID them, they're crap

205s or the PE2s?

I have a set of Dunlop Formula R in 225/45/16, that i'm so tempted to try on my 172. This size is standard fitment on my Fiat Coupe, and this also has 7J rims...... ? What do you think?

Hmmm good thread I'll be needing some new tyres soon looks like I'll be going for the 205 instead of the 195's then
But I'll stick to Goodyear F1's though, there a good price at mytyres

For balance of grip and tyre life I think the michelin exaltos are pretty awesome. Only on day two of trying pe2s so cant comment on latest rubber, but early impressions of wet weather performance are positive.

nah for economy and year round fun PE2's all the way. Lots of tyres are good in the dry but for wet and dry nothing can touch the PE2 - Pilot exalto fullstop even used to run them on my 205gti too. they do last well too.

You cant go wrong with eagles, I love 'em! Never used pe2s but i bet they're not bad either, unless its track work and then theres proof that they fail!

Hi Guys,

I am thinking to go to 205/45/16 with my 172 mk2 as well. Will i notice a slowdown? Or the acceleration will still be as good?

I am thinking to put 182 cup antrhacite rims on.

Cheers,
Kenn.

Hi Craig,

So going from 195/45/16 to 205/45/15 there will be a slight but unnoticible loss? Even changing the width of the tyre but having same rim size?

Cheers,
Kenn.

Alloy size changing from say a 16" to a 17" will result in loss of acceleration keeping the same profile tyre. But increasing the width of a tyre 195>205 will only increase the amount of surface area of tyre touching the road thus increasing handling on twisties.... I found no speed loss, just improved handling.

I have 205 A539's on my 172. I preferred the 195 Contis!!! :-o

I'm going for 205 PE2's next. But only cos they're cheap at Costco. lol.
