197 gear box

I have dismantled the gear box on my sons 197 to replace the 3rd and 4th synchros. What is the best method to hold the input shaft to remove the hollow nut, without damaging the splines etc. Thanks

Apply heat using a hot air blower to the hollow bolt and you’ll be able to hold it in a vice without damaging the splines.

Bit of copper or aluminium between the spline and the vice jaws would protect it if you're worried.

Those bolts are properly FT mate, so the copper/aluminium won’t grip the splines enough, even with heat applied.

cut the centre out of the clutch plate and grip that in a vice.
