1992 Clio mk1 1.8 16S F7P 720 Gearbox

Dear All;

I am from Istanbul/Turkey and a newbie in the forum & to Renault's.

I own a 2009 Clio mk3 RS 197 and a 1992 Clio mk1 1.8 16S which soon will have a complete restoration.
During this period, I will be restoring and upgrading the engine of the 16S which has a F7P 720.
I have a lack of knowledge and in need of your informations and suggestions about the gearbox of this car.

First of all, if I am not mistaken this car has a JC05... gearbox with probably below ratios.. (Please correct me if below are wrong...)

1st 3.091 11x34
2nd 1.842 19x35
3rd 1.320 25x33
4th 0.967 30x29
5th 0.795 39x31
AR/R 3.545 11x39
Final drive 4.214 14x59
*These are the informations I got from the FIA Rally homologation sheet of the 16S...

During the build, I am upgrading the engine with Wossner Pistons / Connection Rods, Cat cams camshafts, pulleys, springs, retainers and valves. Targeting to achieve 160-170 hp.
Therefore, to match these power, I also need to modify the gearbox ratios without changing the gearbox casing.

Could you guys please suggest me about the gear ratios of the Clio mk2 172, 182 as I have been informed that I can upgrade with those ratios and final drives. If not mistaken their gearbox code is also JC05... but the following numbers should be different? what are the following numbers stands for?
after this upgrade, I am also hoping to be able to install Quaife diff lock (QDF6M)....

but makes my limited knowledge even more puzzled as the other link above informs that my gearbox should be either JB3-048 or 053....

Hi;

I did think about all alternatives. But there are only 2 Williams in Turkey while there are only 4 Clio 16S which my one is in best condition....
Very hard to find spare parts, usually all comes from abroad with transportation, tax etc at the top of it....
172 Cup never came or sold in Turkey so thats not an alternative as well...

There were regular 172, 182's and Megane's sold earlier. So, I am hoping to find a way to solve this gearbox issue with these alternatives...
or if the casing of JB3 and JC5 are same but only gears are different then I will try to find the gears and install them inside my JB3....

thats the reason I am trying to figure out the correct ratios both for JB3 and JC5 and then accordingly I can look for parts...

but would cost me way more then the car itself and more trouble...
I prefer to find a way to buy the gears instead...

I am away from the car until mid february.
until then I am trying to gather information and try to purchase parts so that when I have time for the car I can start putting all together.

whats wrong with the current gearbox? if you are going full standard restoration as well I would simply get the existing gearbox rebuilt

edit, ignore I didn't read the original post correctly. however again unless you are getting into serious competition something with 172 cup ratios would be ideal, so simply buy a 172 cup box from UK and get it shipped over with the top gearbox mount and battery tray. rebuild that box and then it will bolt straight in to the car as is, casing is the same as the mk1 box. I have a couple of mk1 clios and both run 172 gearboxes, one is F7P and bolts directly to it, no modification required and the top mount and tray bolt straight in

thats a great news that it's a strait fit...
how about the speedometer of the gearbox on the 172 cup? because earlier I heard some are different as they are electronic instead of old versions has mechanical...
and do you know the gearbox code of the 172 cup (JC5....)? and if any chances the ratios?

as above, the hole in the box is the same, the speed sensor for the 172 cup is plugged into the same mechanical drive slot as the earlier gearboxes where the cable goes.

only the later cars had ABS driven speedo
