2.0 conversion

What parts do I need?
(I have someone doing it but I am sourcing everything myself)

Also will the ecu need recoding?

Can anyone do a basic run through of what needs doing?

there is a million threads on this already.

basically you need a 172 and a donor car then pretty much re-shell it onto your 1.4 chassis.

You need:
hubs, driveshafts, engine, gearbox, mounts, all ancillaries, keys, ecu, decoder ring, loom.

Basically if you want it doing right, you need the front half of the donor car handy

you dont ''need'' the hubs, shafts, gearbox but it is better with all the propper running gear

You can buy a fully-working decent 172 for the amount it would cost to do an engine conversion these days (including all the effort and trial + error you will have to put in).

in all honesty mate unless there is some sentimental value or a special feature about your chassis ie weld in cage... it would be alot better to buy a sport.. will cost the same, be alot easier, save many problems and save alot on insurance. i only 172'd mine because its a van and would be a one of a kind... otherwise id of just bought a 172 straight up

You need:-

1) A 172/182 "donor car"
2) to sell your 1.4

Shouldn't take longer than a couple of hours

I got quoted £500 for labour. My cars a non starter at the moment so if that is something serious and the cambelt is due in 9k then it's not worth fixing (101000 miles).

Also the insurance seems to be cheaper for a conversion as opposed to a 172.
(From what I've read)

insurance is far from cheaper on a conversion.. trust me iv tried.

thing is you can get a 1.4 engine for yours for 200quid if that. drop that in if thats whats causing it not to start.

as for the conversion.. 500 for labour then 1k for a donor.. then the huge insurance jump.. more fuel, then servicing and belts on new engine .. all adds up mate

Put a 1.4 in, straight swap near enough.

Or, break it for spares, use the money you make to put towards a cheap 172.

Buy a 172 in the same colour, grind the chassis numbers off, put your interior in it, (I assume this is about all you care about), change over the stickers on the inside of the door, wack your number plate on and call it a "conversion"

Cheaper insurance, cheaper tax, winner winner, chicken dinner.

Bosh.

unless you can source the parts cheap, then dont bother!!

if you can find a clio thats had the rear end mangled for £500,
then full steam ahead!! flog the kit, get some money back and you could almost do it for free!!

In theory
cheapest you could do it for would to be buy and engine, loom, ecu, lockset and ancillaries,
then do it yourself!! may be able to do it all for £600, but these things rarely go smoothly!!

plus doing the above would mean running 1.2 track, which is not advised in the slightlest!!
youll be munching shafts like theyre going out of fashon and would have to avoid emergency stops!!

In Reality,
its around £1000 for the engine and box and ancillaries loom ecu and lockset,
then while its out the car you may as well give it a proper gasket service, pump and belts £200
then the full track (wishbones, shafts, hubs, arb, brakes, steering rack) will set you back around £300
then you might as well do new discs pads and bushes and joints as the parts you buy may have sat around for a bit! £200
then transporting all the bits to the garage, £100,
then the labour for the garage to fit it all £500

£2300,

and that doesnt include the extra bill for the garage to find out why it doesnt start! lol
thats the money youll be paying for a very good 172/cup, and they come with nicer interior and the sport kit!!

AND TO TOP IT OFF!!

you wont be able to sell your car for 2300, thats 182 money,
might get 1500 if the body work is in good nick!!

sell yours even as S/R for around £300,
and fork out some money on a real 1*2

grind the chassis numbers off. Bosh.

In for a penny, in for a pound.

If you're going to have a shonky knock-off, may as well go the whole hog.

Oh, and check your windows for any reg. markings too and get them replaced, last thing you want is for it to be in any way saleable when you realise what you've done

Tis true but my boss lost his van after he had a samll crash and the insurance company checked the numbers. Older cars its silly simple to do though. I love rivets.

I didn't realise the 1.4 engine was so cheap. If thats what it is then I'll do that.

Alternative is break the 1.4. I got a quote on a 182 for £1300 and a 172 for £3400... :L

That's if I want a nother clio.

I'd hope so it being a 1.4 ;)

I meant that you'll need to change the ECU and locks and ignition and stuff too, not just the engine.
