200 butterfly valve?

am not much of a mechanic and i was wondering what the butterfly valve does on the 200?is there any need for it as ive seen some guys with 182's removing them and i was wondering if this does any harm to the engine an what gains they get out of it. any info would be grateful.

Can be removed but you have to elave the motor mechanism in place or you'll get engine management light.

Its called an acoustic valve, basiocally makes the engine a bit quieter at certain engine speeds.
