2002 172 - What Oil?

Hi, Picking my car up tonight.
It will require a service shortly.

Please advise the best oil to use and/or similar/cheaper brands.

I've had a quick search and it sound slike 5w40 fully synthetic is the way to go? Sound about right?

Halfords own brand 5w/40 fully synthetic is the best value, i use it in my cup

The guy I have just purchased the car from has recently topped itup with 15w40 (BP)

As far as I am aware it's less than 1l topup. Think i'll be ok for a while?

it will be fine, if its a mineral oil it will degreade the properties of the oil currently in the engine, if the oil in the engine is of a superior quality.... what also troubles me is why he recently topped it up? where is the oil going for it to be required to be topped up?

from factory they use ELF 5W40 and about 5lt of it.

Surley all cars use a little oil?
I think it's due a service now awayway but might not get chance for a couple of weeks.

I think Renault say 1 litre per 10,000 miles is normal, if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me.
