2002 Dci65 Gearbox dilema (Gearbox codes)

  2002 clio 1.5 dci65
Hi, I am new to this forum.I am mechanically experienced but have a problem with the gearbox fitted to my wifes clio and am after help off the clio experts on here.

The gearbox has been whining for a couple of months but has been locking into gear recently. It seems as though there is internal gear rail bearing failure. I intend removing the gearbox and replacing it with a second hand one.

Am i correct in thinking that in oreder to remove the box i need to disconnect the bottom arms and steering (including steering rack from column bottom joint), and remove the front subframe??

I have removed battery and ecu in order to make top access easier.
I also assume drive shaft inner cv's once retaining bolts removed simple prise out?

Also i have checked the gearbox code of the box currently fitted and it is a JB1-513 xxxxxxx however when i rang renault they said it should be fitted with a JB3-980??

Is it possible that the well informed/experienced on here could let me know which gearbox code boxes would fit and work with minimum of fuss as there appears to be a multitude of different codes.

I am as on a limited budget and all help is greatly appreciated.

The car once again is a 51 plate 2002 clio 1.5DCi65 dynamique.

Also i notice a few threads on here with reference to excessive gearstick movement and they suggest that this is a common feature of clios. i assumed that this was happening on my wifes clio due to a gearbox problem. if it is normal, i was wondering if it would be possible to fit a top engine stabiliser bar as normally fitted the the likes of the old minis to reduce engine/box rocking as much.

many thanks Neil

you can fit a powerflex lower mount but they are soft for a reason, personally it does my head in and mines stiffened up with the powerflex mount and i much prefer it but it does vibrate a bit.

if you do need a jb3 i have one for sale came from an 03 plate kangoo.

Have started the job today, and so far so good, as usual i have taken off loads more than i need to, but if it makes more room for working in then that normally means less scraped knuckles.

I have been surprised just how easy it was to drop the subframe, thought it would have been worse considering it has the steering rack attached. Driveshafts are out also, all thats left to do now is support the engine and uncouple the box.

Any help as to which box will be the best one for me to source though would be much appreciated.:)

Wants to be a JB3 due to it having a higher torque rating than the JB1, i'm gueesing its been changed before at a guess. As iirc the 65 and 80 should both use it.

Yes they need to be the right ones as that denotes the varient model of the box so the ratios etc are right.
