200T VS 220 Trophy

Considering one of these next but I'm not sure if the Trophy is worth the extra over the standard car.

Has anyone driven/owned both and how do they compare?

I've read the reviews, the Trophy seems the better choice but journalists don't think with their own wallets so that's what I need to know really, is it really worth the extra?

Unless the extra 20hp also removes the gearbox that they were all saying was beyond rubbish, probably not.

208Gti? Pugsport edition?

See the reviews say the Trophy gearbox calibration is considerably better.

I'd need the car to have 5 doors so it's fairly limited on choice

haha, the Focus has been discussed actually but it's a little too expensive.

Focus ST is a contender but I didn't like the way it drove when I tried one, it had no grip at all.

Actually, the trophy's gearbox is how it should've been all along. To be honest, the whole trophy is the car that the 200 should have been. On that basis, is it worth the premium? You're paying an extra several ££££ for what is essentially bugfixes.

Megane is probably a better shout.

Again though, you can't get a 5 door Megane 265 and the 'best' new one is the GT....

Is it not possible to remap the engine and gearbox on the standard 200 to Trophy spec??

Different turbo used on the trophy, also different gearbox.

For the price you can get the 200 EDC's for now i'd go for one of them!

Driven both and the Trophy is MUCH better.

I'd still have a used Mk3 200 though or a 275 Megane if you can stretch.

I found that they felt like fast versions of normal cars, rather than Renaultsport of old, i.e. quite special, relatively.

I didn't find it bad at all; it was similar in weight and feel to my Mk3 200. Both electric anyway so it's mostly calibration.

The gearbox is, and always has been the issue with the Mk4. Even with the new software on the Trophy, it's lazy, clumsy when you surprise it and just generally pretty sh*te.

Yes I did find the gearbox in the 200 EDC very frustrating. I haven't driven a Trophy to compare sadly.

I drove a Golf R DSG last week and the gearbox was very, very good. Obviously the R is pretty pricey, but you might get a nice GTI for sensible money?

I've not driven an R, but other DSG-type 'boxes are brilliant. The Clio's is just really hesitant and hinders you having fun. IMO

I was considering a Polo GTi but I think you pay a large premium for the brand.

The Golf is a little bit big in reality.

I can see where the criticism for the 200 box comes from as I've found it a bit clumsy at times in auto mode. When in race mode I find it fine when giving the car a bit of a kicking.

I've not driven any other auto cars so couldn't compare with other boxes.

I bought some parts off a guy that works at Evo Magazine. He said that even the trophy isn't great, especially compared to the Fiesta /208. And that despite them saying it wasn't great, they've held back a little bit due to their good relationship with Renault.

Given that it's not anywhere near best in class, I'd be tempted to buy a used one without warranty and get the gearbox mapped

Isn't the Megane 275 Cup-S starting at 23k..?

That said, i just couldn't spec one without the Recaros/Ohlins/Xenons so that 23k is now 28k lol.

Exactly. Base is £23.5k but Recaros, RSM2 & xenons (the options I specced) took it to £26k and that's without the £1.5k for Ohlins... or the £2k Akrapovic.

im looking to get a trophy over the standard 200t as its only a few grand difference and you get a much better car for it

I was looking at the Megane Cup-S as there are some tempting lease deals around on them, but they are pretty poverty spec sadly. Put the Climate Pack on and it makes it a bit more bearable, but I think I would regret not having the Recaro seats at the very least.

Needs to be a 5 door guys, so it's Clio200/220, Focus ST or.... I'm pretty sure that's it.

Whats the absolute need for 5-door??

Personally I totally prefer a 5-door car for practicality, but I don't know if I'd buy an inferior car just because it's got the extra doors.

Well I was considering a Fiesta ST but having tried to get into the back of one it's impossible. I'm trying to future proof this if we plan to keep it long term.

Just realised Kia do a C'eed GT... :-\

VW do a Polo GTI 5 door so that's an option

C'eed GT... :-\

Is superb.

There'll be many nay-sayers on here, probably with 10yr old French buckets, but for the money, and the warranty, and the spec, you wont get much better than a GT C'eed.

Almost wound up financing one, until I remembered that I don't like car finance

I drove my managers 220 trophy. The other day sounded went well but was as someone else stated it felt like a fast version of a normal car nothing special. I drive a 172 cup which feels. Totally sportier. But I'd pick the trophy over it. How would mine compare next to his head to head

If the focus is an option, how about golf gti? Or any of the several options on the same chassis from audi/seat/skoda? Is the s1 available as a 5 door?
