21.7 MPG Something wrong?

  HBT 172 Cup
Get the car to Gaz at Longwell green service station in Bristol he will sort the car out for you very fairly priced and has a passion for doing a good. PM me if you would like his details.

Im not spending more then 40/500 on sorting everthing on this piece of s**t

People are trying to help you.

Your car, as it stands, is worth £2k max. It doesn't sound in good health and hasn't had a service in over 2 years.

So you can either spend some money and get it how it should be or have girly tantrum and sell it and lose a couple of grand.

IT could do with a full engine flush. I Got mines done, even though its on 87 000 the oil is still a golden syrup colour since the service 5000 miles ago.

A bit off topic but a guy at my work never serviced his car for six years, the engine has started to go now. The garage has quoted £500 so far but even they admit they do not know what horrors lurk inside till they start work on it. Six years on the same oil doing plenty miles is hardly surprising. So get it sorted before it gets worse.

So what do you plan to do about it?

oil, oil filter and air filter you can do on your driveway, cheapest/easiest thing to do. If the problem persists go to a specialist and ask their opinion. It could be a number of different things, best thing you can do is have a specialist have nosey and plug it into a diagnostics programme.

Surely if you've bought it from a 'reputable' garage with warranty, then you should be able to get it sorted and send said garage the bill?? I know I would be kicking off if i'd paid 4k for what you've described!!! Was there a 'cooling off period'??? when you bought it??

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
I would personally be doing 3 oil and filter changes over 500 miles, using something relatively cheap for the first 2. I'd recommend having the timing checked, and get plugged in to see if your lambda is functioning correctly

All I got told was there was a 3 month warranty that was is. As someone said in post before I should reset my trip computer I just have and my mpg and everything are running perfectly. If I flor it the mpg go down in I sit in 5th at 30mph it rises. It's never done thy before. It just say at 21.7 all the time no mateer what. I soppose that's half the battle. Cheers guys!!!!!

Follow this, please!

Your oil probably looks like crude oil again by now.

Cruel luck. Chin-up mate!

Please don't burry your head. You have the car now and that its that. As has been said, you should not have spent that for a 182, loads of guys on here trying to sell their "mint" examples for less than you paid etc...

It runs now, it will be fine! Just do not skimp on the upkeep from now on. Get the belts done and make it the car you really wanted it to be. Go for it! Take your time and make it perfect... unless you get offered £2000 - in that case consider getting another example.

Low MPG is not how they should be. I comute in stop start traffic and get 32.5 on average - and that works out at 300miles per tank

Cheers kev, I don't think it's as bad as I'm making out but I'm going to treat it as it is and like you said make it perfect and keep it that way, I bought this car in good faith. I had been told something from a popular garage and believed it more fool me I guess. It's a shame really because it is a beautiful car. Cheers for all the help and support from everyone!

I've notcied so many guys on here are always so keen to spout their wisdom and criticise others - truth is, we all do what we feel is right for ourselves and our cars, and that is fine. Any rs clio is a performance bargain!:approve:

why does anything to do with MPG always get a s**t load of responses

Everyone is figure chasing ;) (car's down at Matts between 3rd to the 10th March FYI)

If it's not been done in that long I would do;

Oil (5.1L (5 will do)), oil filter, pollen filter, air filter, spark plugs (ebay NGK Platinum - £30). I would do this as a MINIMUM tbh. This should set you back about £100 depending on the quality of what you buy. About an hours labour, or if you can do it yourself bonus.

i would say take it to one of the specialists and get a full service/ engine flush/diagnostics etc, runing that long on spark plugs alone cant be good for the car let alone the oil. i would say thats what causing the low mpg, and i bet it will be suffering from low performance aswell.

Not adviseable really. I bet all the gunk is clogging holes up, so he doesn't need other potential issues arising.
