306 gti6, how do they compare to...

M

M7CUO_V6

How do they compare to the 182, performance wise? A mate of mine is after one, and im after a trophy. I imagin not much in it, gti6's are sweet handlers and not slow.

Would imagine there is very little in it. My money would be on the Trophy...should handle a lot better and be quicker of the mark. Do a search on Google or something and check out the stats!

^
I think they do 60 in 7.2 & the 306 rallye did it in 6.9 - peugeot always seem to quote higher 0-60 figs :S I think its so that they can get the car into a lower insurance category (something like that)

Don't think so, a bit too quick that... 8.5 sounds about right. Very good chassis though :)

My mates got a gti-6 good car.. and you'll have to really try hard if you want to loose him

i was under the impression peugeot quoted higher figures as well, take for example saxo vts and 106 gti stats, there is no reason for the differences in the performance which was officially quoted.

The 182 is the quicker car but only if you are a good driver. The pug is still a top motor,i like the rallye for a bit of old skool

pugs stats inlcudes something like a full tank of petrol and at least 2 ppl in it or something, citreon go 1 driver not much fuel

  106 GTi
Standard GTi 6 vs Standard Trophy - the Trophy will have the edge. Not a fan of the standard suspension set up of the GTI 6.

  Turbo Beige
One of my best mates has one with a few essential mods, full group N engine mounts, solid rear bushes (removes passive rear steer), group N skip browns suspension set up with custom billies and a quaife diff with a 5.2:1 final drive. Best handling FWD car i have been in, and loads faster than my 182, the diff gives it so much traction and the lower FD means it flys to the limiter in sixth (120mph) in next to no time.

We were at the ring at the end of August in the wet, he was on his sixth lap and was taking the Karousel at around 70mph + and was still acceralting all the way round in 4th, i was just able to get mine to the limit to change up into third on the way out!!!!

Personally i would have bought a Rallye if i had driven one before i bought the 182.

  172 Cup
they are slightly slower in a straight line, my workmate had one. I always thought the handling on them was good, but hes just bought a saxo vtr (cos of house move) and he thinks they handle better than the GTI-6. the Rallie is a different story!

  Black S2 106 Rallye LHD
Rallye/Gti is hardly "different story".

Same set up, just slightly lighter - it's mostly about increased feel.

They are cool, but the Clio is a tad smaller and with more power.

The 306 is cheaper to buy, but mpg is apparently poor, and cambelt problems can be expensive.

  172 Cup
different story cos i dont know anyone with one! peugeot havent quite got the knack of making powerful engines.

Renault only managed 5 more bhp from the 172 a few yrs after the 306 Gti was released... ;)

  172 Cup
yes but the pocket rockets clio 172 compares to a 106 gti with a max 130bhp which sucks, and the 306 gti with 167bhp would normally compare to a megane 225 so you cant really say that they only managed 5 brake in a few years! face it peugeots arent that great at producing performance engines!!

Independent testing (two occupants, full tank of fuel) show the following figures:

0-60mph:

Clio 182 6.3 secs

306 GTI6 7.9 secs (Rallye 7.8 secs)

0-100mph:

Clio 182 17.0 secs

306 GTI6 21.5 secs (Rallye 20.7 secs)

30-70 (through gears):

Clio 182 5.8 secs

306GTI6 7.4 secs (Rallye 6.8 secs)

Top speed:

Clio 182 138mph

306 GTI6 130mph (Rallye 130mph)

Hope this helps.

(Demonstrate that performance wise the Clio murders the 306 that is).

Agreed ^ Evo mag shows the 182 as 17..5 secs to 100 and 20.7 secs for the GTI-6, but you do realise, this will be an invitation for the GTI fanboys to come over and claim how X or Y magazine is wrong, is taking backhanders, etc etc...

  Honda Civic Type R
clio is definitely faster. and i found it handles better too. a different driver might tell you something else though. but as for quickness, theres no debate. clio's are rapid, but then so was the 306 when it first came out in 1993. a great car even today:approve:

Ah, Mr Birkett Sir, always a fine adversary in these situations.

And the Gti fanboys can come at will, the Clio's figures are unarguably so much quicker than the GTI6's (in every single increment) that there is no defence.

That Pug's a fine car though and ultimately it probably posesses a slightly sweeter chassis than the Clio.

I heard that the head gaskets on the GTI6 tend to blow a lot.

Mate had one and had nothing but trouble with it.

I have a 172 cup and my mate has a GTI6 and having been out for a spin in his, it's definitely significantly quicker than the figures make out. I believe that the official figures were actually recorded in a fully laden car, 4 occupants, to get the GTI6 into a lower insurance group, correct me if im wrong however! As for the top speed, he's had it off the clock (private road etc.;) ), and it reads up to 140mph if im correct, so obviously flat out it would beat a 172/182 but on track I dont think there would be much in it between good drivers, well that's what me and him are going to find out next year for sure anyway

  Bora TDI - (ex172)
I had a Gti-6 phase 3 and without doubt its quicker than 8.5 to 60mph. 7.2 - 7.5 is about right. Very similar handling to the Clio and just as fun to drive. Pros and Cons for both but for me, the 306 is built better. Feels more solid and more planted on the road. And when I sold it last year, It had no rattles!!! unlike my 3 year old Clio.

For me handles basically the same, lift off oversteer etc, but maybe not as twitchy under heavy braking. Performance wise, the Clio has it from 60 to 100 as shown by the figures, and its actually quite noticeable. The good thing about racing to 60 is the 1st gear throws you to about 40mph if you nail it and that allows you to beat most things off the lights, change to 2nd gear and thats where the time is lost.

I'd have one again. Without doubt

gti6 0-60, more like 7.2 - 7.5

had mine for over a year now

cambelts can be a problem if you dont change all the right parts, short change time aswell, every 40k miles is advised

lift off oversteer, had never had a problem with mine until last weekend, when damn did I get it back, had to lift off on a slight corner doing 70mph, back end totally went, my mate in the car thought i'd pulled the handbrake, all wheels screaming, fortunately put power down again and pulled straight

  tiTTy & SV650
nice cars gearbox makes em, seem to be always in the power band, my 182 pulled comfortably on my mates gti6 through the twisties, not enough to pass though

  Bora TDI - (ex172)
ummmm, not sure about that Neil G....don't think they were but I could be wrong

mine was like my Clio, Alcantara and Leather., although the seats aren't the best for support.

I should have a 306gti6 for sale in the near future if anyone is interested, r reg 1997, blue, 62k miles, totally standard. Are they still desirable motors?

thanks. thinking back, I should've kept it. sold it to a bunch of 'do ya like dags' pikeys who almost smashed it up on the way out the car park at work.

made me feel sick, but i needed the cash at the time
