3100 Miles, 4 days, 1 Trackday. The 991 GT3 Road trip of Win

  Lotus Elise
Hello Guys,

So as previous explained my old mans Porsche 991 GT3 arrived just before Christmas, it was sent to Specialist Vehicle Preparations to have some pre pick up work. The car was looked over by a professional detailer and the cage was removed and the painted Carrera White to match the Cayman Race Car.

The spec is fairly basic:

Clubsport (cage, fire extinguisher harnesses carbon fixed seats)
All PCM upgrades
LED Head lamps
Auto wipers

Anyway, we set off on the 01/01/14 with the intention of going to Southern Spain but that's about it. We got to Orleans, France on the first day driving the car in the pissing rain through England was not too fun and very stressful. France was better but still didn't learn a lot, it felt very tight and precise but that's it.

Day two we got to Barcelona via the Millau Viaduct, had a nice meal in the city and received a call from Dom at SVP saying we could use his friends circuit in Guadix Spain! Result!!!!! It's the circuit used by many race teams for winter testing and was used for the launch of the RenaultSport Clio 200T. The car at this point felt brilliant, with a few thousand KMs on the mid range was starting to feel really punchy and gearbox and chassis feeling bedded-in. It was really starting to impress.

We arrived in the afternoon and set cracking! The car felt superb on the way down and the engine felt well run in with over 2500KMs on it, the mid range getting stronger and stronger and feeling very happy to be revved out.

We were shown around by the circuit owner in his trusty Clio 200, fine taste!

On track it was f**king brilliant! Easily the best road car on track I or my farther have ever experienced the chassis was superb well balanced, progressive and extremely well tidied down and controlled. The steering gave plenty of the feedback when the front did let go but could be a bit vague and letting you know when the grip came back. The brakes were sublime no issues at all and very very strong.

The engine and box were equally sublime, so fast. So so fast! Free revving all the way to 9k lovely and torque in the mid range and a brilliant linear power delivery. From the outside it sounded just like a race engine and box and it felt it too from the drivers seat. I am still blown away how at how good the car was on track, bravo Porsche bravo!

That evening we set off for Valencia the car feeling perfect and run in. It felt bloody fast too much faster than the first few days.

Well deserved

The next morning we bought a Map book and headed to Andorra in search of some mountain passes, we weren't disappointed. Will post a video of us on the N152 between Ripoll and Puigcerda in northen Spain. Brilliant road all 2nd gear punch and brake for mile after mile, car is so nimble and quick must be rear steer front end totally gripping and lots of rear movement on the throttle, sublime. saw 3 other cars in 20 odd miles what a buzz just the best.

Hate Continental breakfasts!

We stayed in Orleans again then drove back on Sunday.

I love this car, I've missed so much so ask any questions you want. I'll post more videos when they are uploaded :)

A final thought, it feel massively overpowered for the road.......but feels like it could handle more on track

That video is strange. Seeing someone so young driving that fast confuses the brain.

Nice little write up, hugely jealous!

Spotted a few pics on facebook this week, and I have to say I am not at all jealous, much!

Car looks awesome but I'll have to wait to watch the video thanks to shitty BT broadband.

Cheers boys, the videos are taking an age to upload to Youtube. It was a little intimidating being given the keys to a brand new 100k car and an empty circuit, fun though :D

In the rain it would spin the wheels as you crossed the white line entering the motorway, and let you drift off roundabouts with all the driving aids on! The paddle natural feature is nice even if it is just for showing off.

That is so epic! Also I wish I could take a car like that and just drive that well on a track !!

I can only echo everyone else. Truly awesome. Thanks for sharing.

Sadly the only way I think i'll ever own one is if I win the lottery..

Book a trackday and get going ;)

That's proper Sam, seriously proper.

Love the title format too. Format of winners TBH.

Knowsit

Looks a tad nippy that :)

You can say that again, 0-100 mph in 7.5seconds. Evo tested one around Blyton and lapped it quicker than a MP4-12C which has over 600bhp!

Nice. My old man used to have a 996 Gt3 years ago in silver. Great cars.
Yep! He had a 997.2 prior to this, I'm a massive GT3 fan. A 996 GT3 RS is my dream!

Congratulations, you have just won at life. It is hard to describe how jealous I am.

Looks like Dirk Diggler.

Amazing machine!

BTW don't post that on Pistonheads, or the manual gearbox master race will be out with the pitchforks.

Love the GT3, I'd have one over the turbo even for the road.

Your old fella is super-trusting.. Top fella.

It's a joke, the 'box is so bloody impressive and actually adds character with its low speed clonks and grumbling moaning at you for driving so slowly. I wouldn't trade it for a traditional manual not when it's this good.

Yes! The missus isn't too keen though :(

Cheers for the kind words boys I urge you all to go on a decent euro road trip so much fun.
