4th gear CRUNCH

Unless Im really slow with the gear change, I get a CRUNCH going into 4th gear (MK1 172). Its starting to piss me right off now. Is this indicative of a dying gearbox?

Same was happening to me (2nd & 4th), its in at renault getting a whole new box. 2-3 week waiting time on a new box.

Rhys, sounds like it is either a synchro or linkage problem, probably the former unfortunately if it is only in one gear. My MK2 always has a "rag" in 2nd when it is cold. When hot it seams to be fine. On a cold change, have to change up slowly and put clutch fully to floor. Getting easier as mileage gets higher (only 3.5K). Also put in Slick50 manual gearbox treatment which has loosened up the gear change a good bit. As far as i know the MKI and MKII gearboxes are the same items? I also get the stationary 1st gear engagement "clunk" at times. Does this happen on the MK1s?

Being an expert gearbox killer id say that was linkage

with the clio the boxes tend to have the wrong oil in em resulting in sh*tty changes

I dont get any clunks in any other gears, and it doesnt do it every time. In fact, it probably does it more from cold than at any other time. Where can I get this gearbox stuff and can I replace the gearbox oil myself or is it a Ren*ult job?

This happens in my car too. It only does it from 2nd to 3rd when changing really fast but doent bother me that much unless its going to brake something further down the line. Is it a serious fault then? I orginaly thought the air filter was coughing due to high speed changes

Ive not put the Halfords stuff in yet, but Im thinking a synchro problem as suggested by Flying Scotsman. It NEVER crunches 3 - 4 if I allow the revs to die before shifting. Hmm....is this a new gear box thing? Is it repairable? I wanted to put a MK2 box in, but not right at this moment!

Well, Ive always found the box in my Mk2 172 fine, until the last Palmersport track day. It was getting more and more tricky to get it into gear at high revs and then, bang! I missed a gear and the clutch exploded! Nice!

Im on gearbox number 4 on my car......... Its probably the linkage - and this time when they replaced the box they -i think - replaced some plate or something. I wasnt really listening, too busy wanting my car back etc.

Every time the gearbox has been changed its been free. If your car has done a fair few miles, it might be worth getting the clutch changed while the gearbox is out. As its an engine/gearbox etc out job, you may as well get it down while theyre doing your gearbox.

My last gearbox only lasted about 2000 miles......including a few death races.....

The latest one hasnt been subjected to any full throttle changes and i dont think ill do any as im sick of it crunching.

Definately a warranty job tho folks!

try and persuade them to shoe-horn in a 1.2 16v gearbox!

oh, please can i ask the mk.2 172 owners how many revs they are at at 100 mph?

Sounds like the gearboxes on 172s are pretty weak by the sounds of all the people complaining about em.

Try changin the gearbox oil Rhys, might be able to do it yourself but not sure where the fill up thing is on 172s.

Dont spill the gearbox oil though mate. it smells terrible and just never ever goes hehe

ahhhhhhh i have the same problem, from 2nd to third its really rough and feels like theres somthing stopping it, only slight resistamce, so i guess what i need to do is change the gearbox oil????
