5 Inch comps for £100

Which is the best 5 inch component set available for around £100?

any shop, any brand.

I'm looking for sound quality rather than massive volume. Into house mostly.
NOT going to run amp and SUB so need good bass out of the 5inch

I hope your going to amp the speakers? If not its a waste of cash you may as well get something cheap and cheerfull

Those focals would be a pretty good choice but I'll happily recomment pheonix gold all day long! I had them in the clio and was so impressed I got some for the Suzuki too, they had a great sound quality to them and handled full volume without distortion!

What's wrong with the amp in a half decent head unit?
Amps = Quite a lot of f**kin about
Cable ALLLLL the way to the boot and then ALLLLL the way back. That's not good for audio as it is!

What would you go spending on an amp to drive 4 speakers then?

Headunits power is always under what they quote. It puts a lot of stress on the unit and it will get very hot.

To produce a clearer sound id get a small amp, especially as your wanting more bass from them. True audiophile headunits dont even have an on board amp..

Focal & Rainbow are both good makes for superb sound quality.

those Pheonix golds are stunning on paper!
Low and sparkly range of 60Hz-24kHz
70WATT RMS !!! that is a hell of a lot for a 5 inch cone.

In my experience, high power cababilities can mean that the bass doesent respond at low volumes. They seem to tighten the whole speaker and strengthen it for the high volume kicking and that causes the low volumes to suffer. Result - 2 eq settings required or just turn it up!
Anyone else agree.... or am I going to get a kicking myself!

to be honest you can spend anywhere between £50-100 and get a pretty decent amp for the work you're looking for. If you use an amp they are much better as they will control the sound going to the speakers a lot better and as Russ said they will deliver more power to the speakers, helping to get the full capability out of the speakers. You can run speakers from a HU dont get me wrong, but you will be more at risk of blowing the speakers if you try and to the volume up and the sound normally will not be as clear.
If I'm wrong some-one can correct me I'm sure but I ran speakers without an amp in my 1st car and they blew within a few weeks, I amped them on the next set and they sounded much clearer and never died

That's an interesting point. Probably the low pass filters that are fitted into most of the amps.
Even this low end alpine 2 channel is fitted with a subsonic filter to protect the speakers from frequencies the human ear cannot hear.
