It is VERY hard to find an original or unmodified one these days...

Best thing to do is get one thats had minimal alteration like I did. There are still some of these about and you just need to look.

I have actually got two R5 GTTs as play cars, allthough one is rusting badly on the bodyshell, so I have stripped it to the bone now as I have sold most of it to a guy, who is picking it all up next weekend. So I am really down to just the one.

Believe it or not, I only paid £800 for that car!!!


That is actually the day I got it (at the guys house) and its how it was bought...

Came exactly as you see in the pic and had Avo coilovers, side exit SS zorst, silicon hoses, Pipercross filter, DV, alloy intercooler, strut brace, spare set of original wheels, alarm & immobiliser, 11 months MOT, FSH, etc. The bodywork is superb (as you can see) and it still has the original decals on the side too, so I was well pleased when I got my hands on that for such a low price.

Reason it was so cheap is that the HG was blown (due to the rad blowing and dumping the coolant), thats all. So, I fixed a few bits that it needed, put the engine in from my other car (that I had recently re-built ready to be modded) and I have since sold that engine with the blown HG.

It all worked out nicely for me and this is probably the sorta thing you wanna look out for

However, I had to drive a LONG way to get that and I had looked at maybe a dozen others that were sh!t before I saw this one. Plenty for sale, but most of them are shagged, so take your time and look at several. Also, it helps if you know a bit about the car and know what to look out for.

There are good cars out there, but you have to look long & hard for them...

I was very lucky with that one though...

However, there are others out there and you just need to find one thats in the right condition and for the right price.



Like you say, rust is an issue and should be top of the list!

These cars are at least 12 years old now, many even older, so when I was looking for the white one it was bodywork that I was concerned with above all else. Then worry about other bits like interior, mechanicals, FSH, etc...

Mechanical items and trim can be fixed, replaced, etc... but rust is terminal!

It is better to get one with some mechanical defects and good bodywork, rather than one that is mechanically perfect and has some body issues. Now a bit of rust on a tailgate, or a wing is ok as these can be un-bolted and swapped, but any on the main shell is a big no-no!

Trust me, thats why I have scrapped the grey one.

The dreaded "metal worm" has taken hold of it in a BIG way!

Now the door can just be swapped, but the front panel and all around the screen are royally f*cked, due to the windscreen seal being split in the centre and water has just crept around the inside of the seal and formed rust all around the screen. Plus the sills are going, but thats easy to fix, the screen is not, hence scrap!
