  Skoda
My Dad is after a new TV after his 50" rear projection just packed up..

He wants something with less bulk than the rear projetion. Must be HD all the mod cons etc..

Not bothered about price but wants something top notch

Any ideas?

Must be 50" or bigger

Find a TV here. Go into John Lewis and tell them it's cheaper in Empire Direct. They price match et voila.

Result = nice TV + 5 year warranty.

The warranty alone usually makes up any price difference.

The 50" pioneer kuro plasma is regarded as the best you can buy. They do it in 1080p too. Visit pioneers website. You wont do better than the pioneer! It will be better than the sony's, samsungs, etc etc. No other tv produces black levels like the pioneer kuro's

The man is right the non full HD plasma is still concidered better than all the other band full HD tvs. You can geta full HD version which is well, s**t hot.!!

Can get a good price on them now as the next gen 8G is coming out soon (called .......9G).

3k Full HD

2k Non HD

do they actually tell you the contrast ratio?

as i just had a quick look and it just says extreme?

so you buy a car because someone says it's fast rather than getting some fact and figures?

i'd got for one of these
He asks for the best you can buy and you tell him to buy a samsung? fpmsl!

PIONEER KURO.... nothing else is worth thinking about.
If i had the money i certainly would. I'm not embarrassed to admit that the only reason i bought the panasonic viera was because i couldn't afford a Kuro.

Next to that... Bang and Olufsen... but then we're talking silly money for a tv that really is no better..

It takes a very long time for screen burn to occur, and its not really a major issue on current plasmas. It can happen on lcd`s aswell.

Pioneer all the way!!! I spend lots of time reading up on TVs and other gadgets, but beer is preventing me from typing more to justify my choice.

As far as screen burn goes, I wouldn't worry about it. Unless you leave something on pause for hours it's never going to be an issue. Yes, some channels have their logo static in the corner, but unless you have the tv turned on to that channel for, again, hours at once, you're not going to notice anything. And even if you did, once you change it'll be gone reasonably quickly.

I know a lot of people with Plasmas (I don't have one, I have my projector ;) ) and none of them have ever had an issue with screen burn.

LCD is great for general viewing, and there are more features out there to improve the picture quality than for Plasma, but then Plasma doesn't need as many. If you watch a lot of films or like the picture to be as sharp as possible with the best depth and clarity, then it'd have to be Plasma. LCD simply cannot match the blacks and richness of Plasma...

Oh dear, I seem to have begun a rant. I'll stop because while I thought the beer was going to prevent me from typing much, it seems that it's going the other way and I was about to start on some technical balony that I find really interesting, but I fear the starter of this thread may not.

Anyway, final words: If you want 50" or a bit bigger then my choice would be a Pioneer Plasma everytime. But you did say price isn't an issue, so what about a Panasonic TH-103PZ600U? Or even better, look out for the Panasonic Lifewall! ;)

Oh, and don't listen to people that moan on about screen life either. Let's say a Plasma has a life of 30,000 hours (some are longer now), and you have the TV on 6 hours a day, every single day (unrealistic). It'd take arouns 13 years 8-1/2 months to burn the screen out. AND, the bit the dweebs in Currys never know, if you do a bit of homework you find out that LCD screens have about the same life expectancy as Plasma.

I just thought I should mention that as time and time again, I hear people bang on about Plasma screen life as if it matters or something.

I have the old 43" pioneer.

It is superb.

Screen burn does occur, for instance watching the MTV for 3 hours .........

New versions have pixel shifting technology and other methods to prevent screen burn.

LCD's screen burn.......... TV has to be on the same image for a bloody long time!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Would not affect it for normal use.

The new pioneer looks gorgeous.

Depends what you use it for really.

Ive had both the SXE and XDE pioneers and they are gorgeous.

I cannot comment for the Sony LCD's as I have never owned one, but they look awesome, specially with the X series, the colour on that is amazing.
