I changed my oil last sunday at a mates house,
and today the oil waring light went on, checked the oil
and its all leaked out from the filter!?

What the hell could cause that?
It's a brand new filter, it was hand tightened.

Suggestions?

That was the first thing I checked mate,
it was bone dry, ive traced the leak back to the oil filter,
there is a big slick of oil starting from the filter.

ive always seen people use that tool,

but i suppose it depends on how tight you did it? personally i would get one of those. a waste of 5l of oil

i know that my hand tight wouldnt be tight enough,

did you rub a little oil round the seal before you put it on?

Yes I did that, primed the filter and rubbed it round the seal.
The mate who helped me builds modified land rovers for brutal
off road abuse, he knows more adout cars than i'll ever know.

Thats why i'm a bit freaked out about it as it was only an oil change,
not hard to get it right, hes changed the oil on hundreds of cars
and never had anything like this happen.

Sure you put the seal back on properly? Hand tight is tight enough! Do NOT use one of those tools for putting it on, they're only for getting the filters off!

is there an adapter plate between the filter and the block, or does it screw straight into the block? (can't recall having noticed on mine)

that, or may be the sealing face isn't true - or the filter was faulty

I thought that the filter might be faulty, and it srews straight onto the
block.

seems likeliest; guess you can only renew it again and check the mating face whilst you're at it

I coming to this conclusion aswell, i've changed the oil myself
on this car and nothing went wrong and that was the first time
I had ever changed the oil on any car and I had no problems.

Strange!!

I diddn't think it was anything me or my mate did after all
it's only an oil change, not rocket science!

only thing i'd be worried about at this point (other than slim possibility that there's a prob with the block face - unlikely), is the amount of oil you've pumped out through the filter. just need to either drop the oil and measure how much you've lost, or top it up after having changed filter

if you've not lost too much, no further concern

Ive lost damn near all of it mate!

However the temp guage never moved and it has just below minimum
on the dip stick, and thats after its cooled down.

I hope to christ its not a hole in the block face, but it did cross my
mind.

you may have debry on the steel ring (engine side) when fitting the filters you hand tighten them - then turn 3/4 more.

OK, i'll check for crap on the blocks ring, and make sure its on quite tight
the only thing I can do is get more oil and a new filter and try again.

At least it took a week for it to all leak out and not all in one go.

If I hand tighten it and then another 3/4 will I have tighten it with
a filter strap? As this goes against everything ive ever been told about
tightening filters.

if your dipstick is showing just below minimum then you have only lost just over a litre of oil so you will still have four in your engine

Guenuine filter from Renault.

Ive just checked the dipstick again now the cars cold and its on minimum.

So hopefully its only lost a litre.

Gonna buy another filter tommorow, drain the oil, fit new filter and
pour whats left back in.

Hope that sorts it.

just below min on the dipstick means you've lost about 1 litre ;)
