5th Gear squeel

My 172 has suddenly developed a whine/squeel in 5th gear. It only happens when I come of the accelerator but when I accelerate the noise goes away, all gears are easy and smooth to engage nothing feels abnormal. Strange how the noise only comes from 5th gear anybody know what the problem could be?

ive got this, recently had the box rebuilt and its still there, the box builders assured theres nothing wrong so im just living with it

How loud is the noise from yours? Mine is really loud alarming loud infact.

Right it's not going into 5th gear at all now as soon as I try to put it into 5th and bring the clutch pedal up there is a whining/groaning noise and then it pops out of gear. Every other gear works perfect apart from 5th. Somebody must have and idea what could be up with it?

I think you have just answered your own question there.. 5th gear is obviously knackered.. Get it to a Renault Sport specialist to rule out anything else then it will be a matter of finding somewhere to rebuild the gearbox..

5th gear now engages fine and doesn't pop out now really strange I'm starting to think it might be a new clutch.

does it make the noise with the clutch depressed? does it only do it in 5th?

Only does it in 5th and when the clutch is depressed yes also I've discovered it only does it after/during a spirited drive. Weird one :S

Same as mine mate only started this week only had the car on road this week aswell lol.
Did u ever find out what this problem is ?
