5th Gear Whirring Noise?

  RB 182
When driving in 5th gear I am getting high pitched whirring noise when accelerating which had gradually gotten worse over the past week or two and recently it has started to make a high pitch noise when putting into 5th gear from 4th. Does anyone know what this can be?

Having checked yesterday I have found quite a leak which I'm guessing might be the gear selector seal so I topped the oil up. This has made the gear changes a bit tighter and the whirring in 5th has quietened somewhat.

Are the symptoms I'm describing going to be fully down to the leak or is it going to be something more than this?

Any help would be appreciated!

Spoke to my local Renault specialist on the phone today, they seemed pretty certain its a bearing in the gearbox from what I described. I know they'll need to check it out first but does that sound about right?

As above probably the diff bearing, I have the same problem.

Im taking the box out myself eventually to save on labour costs, handing the car to a garage to have the job done Id expect it to be around 1k.

Looks like its going to be costly then considering I don't have the space, tools or know how to do it myself!
They told me to not drive it, if I need to will I damage it beyond repair? Hope the weather holds up, plenty of cycling to and from work now, haha

I'd call up Fred at BTM and get some advice. I've been driving mine with it for several months now and the noise had not gotten any worse. Gearbox works fine too, no crunching and that.

Fred did tell me a rough price for a rebuild on the gearbox but I can't remember it now

Cheers for the heads up, taking it in for them to have a look at the weekend so will see how it goes. Seen a few threads on here mentioning a company in Birmingham that do rebuilds reasonably priced...might be an option.

I've been driving mine daily too, doesn't crunch in gear either, just taking it easy.

Hoping for the circa 275 price from agency too, girlfriends driving me an the box down when I get it out.

Worth having a new clutch put in whilst the box is out.

Mmmmm new clutch......

So I take it it's 275 with the box out of the car?
