6 Speed box



  Black Gold 182 (Cup Pack)
Apart form the obvious cost, and not sure quite how much you would benefit, could you use the 197 6 speed box in the 182?

It is the same engine is it not? Im sure a bit of cutting and grinding would do the trick!:S

I'd say it would be nice to have a 6 speed in a Clio 172/182, always found that it sat a bit high in revs when you're sitting at higher speeds.

God knows about the cost and implications though!!! lol
 
You could get it to work you'd need the 197 bottem end as well as the clucth mating face is different. Alos the engine mounts are different (one is the same I think) so you need to make new ones. The 197 box won't help with high speec cruising though since its no higher gear it will help on track as there 1 more gear to use.

Also the box is hydrolic i think so you ned to sort a hydrolic clutch system (not that difficult though when you think of what else you need).
 
The 197 'box (in the 197 at least) is a miracle. It defies all laws by having a very low overall ratio, yet not actually giving low ratio accelaration. Its ratios are so low it should take the 197 to 100 in less than 16s, but it doesnt. Did I say 197? I meant 187 ;)

Anyway thats a different matter really, I certainly dont think the 197 6 speeder would improve motorway manners in a 182, probably make it worse actually. A lot depneds on the final drive in the dif, of course.

6th gear wouldn't be taller than 5th, just a shorter throw in between so you'd all be moaning for 7th gear for motorway.

with 6 gears you may even need 3rd gear for 60mph

Yeah sorry I do keep banging on about it, but someone needs to. With its power/weight, and its very low overall gearing, it should be rapid as f**k under 100. We all know that it isnt. UberOptimistic power claims? :D

lol perhaps when the mods were fitted to a well matched well run in 182 engine it made 194bhp

LOL maybe. It is becoming very clear to me that the 197 is pushing closer to 190bhp maximum (but not on 95RON eh?) rather han 194.

Think about it. "197" sounds great until you drive one. Then you realise it's 194. Then you realise its probably no more than 190 and given the weight it's no surprsie it feels slow compared to a 182. I hate getting too involved in paper figures, especially with the 197 because it is such a superb drive, but in a straight line it's not a perfromance car IMO.

I'd say it has less than 10bhp over a "182" (ergo 189?), and I always said it would need at least 210bhp to match the pace. Again, I dont like getting bogged down with the figures too much, but the claims force this kind of discussion when the car feel so slow :(

I already have a few fingers in a few 225 pies. I still need to test drive one but its is my next car so far. Looking at a FF with Cups & Recaros :cool: At least its (apparently) actually a fast car.

im booking a 197 and 225 test drive in a few weeks, not looking to change just something to do.

I acually meant I cant help defending my principles.

LOL I know I am probably creating the impression that I'm a bit of a knob (as it would appear by reactions in the 95RON thread) but I really do just say what I think. I think the 197 is slow so I say it, despite fully accepting that it's a far better car than the 182.
 
If you want longer box get a dci 80 box fitted. The ratios will be massive

1st would be good for 36mph or so
2nd would be good for 72mph.
3rd would be good for 110mph
4th would be good for 145mph or so.
5th would in theory allow you to reach a 188 or so but there not enough power to do that but 70mph on the motorway would be more like 2.7k.

You can always have the gearbox ratios chnaged for a longer 5th if you want its just so costly no one bothers.

why don't you ask the experts on the offical renaultsport forum your question? i reckon they could easily give you a nice short answer, they are good at that.

the 197 box won't fit the 172/182 engine

but we do do a 6speed conversion for the JC5 gearbox, remorgate your house first though! ;)

Just a warning - Renault PK6 gearboxes ( 6 speed ) have a terrible reputation. There poorly built using cheap internals and are always going wrong. A similar box is used in the Laguna 2 and Renault traffic. Renault have recalled 1000's of these boxes and im 100% confident that the 197 boxes are going to pop when they have 20k + on the clock.

the PK6 is shite, designed and built by renault, the new ND0 and the KV6 (i think it is, form the 197) are both Nissan developed

but you're probably correct, they fall to bits!
