6 week old Cup - New gearbox !!!

My almost new Cup is going in for a new gearbox tomorrow. 2 weeks into owning it I noticed a whining noise coming from the passenger footwell, so I took it into my local garage...........and found out that the gearbox was only two-thirds full with oil!

They filled it up and said to give it a couple of days, and if the whining didnt stop, they would replace it. Obviously it didnt!

Now, Renault have been pretty good about it, but thats not the point. It shouldnt have happened in the first place. What I want to know is ..... is this the sort of thing I can expect while owning a Cup?

Is it just me? Are Cups cursed?

The brakes also stick! When I release the handbrake and reverse off the drive there is a lovley CLUNK as the brakes free themselves, and a have also encountered the knocking noise of the engine against the subframe when I wheelspan in the wet.

Im going to mention that knocking tomorrow at the garage and Ill post their answer on here at the weekend.

My gearbox was exactly the same from new mate!!!

First noticed the whining (1st gear only) after about 2 weeks, so I took it in and they changed the gearbox oil, but it just got worse, so they ended up fitting a brand new gearbox under warranty when it was only 6 weeks old, but its been fine since then.

As for the handbrake sticking on, a lot of cars do it in this weather and its the pads rusting to the discs, nowt to worry about.

The knocking when wheelspinning is the exhaust hitting underneath when the engines thrashing about, so ease back in the wet.

Wakeup call for me here, 172 is in at dealer on monday for front wipers & alarm, think Ill get em to check oil level in gearbox (even though ive no noise, oil drip or reason to think ive a problem) might as well check so i know its not half empty etc

Not just a problem with Cup, my 172 gearbox was replaced because of the clunking at about 2000miles.

I recently found out that the car I am buying has had warranty repairs on the gearbox.

It went back to a renault dealer 3 times to have various gears fixed.

Hopefully its all OK now, if not then its stil got over 2 years warranty so its all good.

I spoke to the guys at Renault and to the dealer that sold the car and did the rectification work. So I am fully aware of the warranty repairs.

Its also had the drivers seat cover replaced twice due to bad stiching.

So Im going in with my eyes wide open, and to be perfectly honest, I kinda expect problems nowadays. The info Ive had is more honest than a dealer would give if he was selling the car etc.

I had a brand new nissan almera and that had problems, so why should a clio be any worse.

Just remembered, before i took delivery of the car on 22nd nov the dealer said that renault france had revised some part(s) in all 172s built during nov 2003 maybe they were aware of some probs anyway due to number of warranty claims with gearbox - anyone in the know can confirm if this is true ?

Coco Pops -

Youre probably better with that than a new one as at least most of the common things will have been rectified already...

Mine was always in when I first got it, but its generally been ok now once all the teething troubles were irone out.

Remember you have a warranty, so take it in for any fault and get it sorted!
