The little willy that swam across the water...

Bought this on the 23-01-12 up in killkenny,Ireland(2.5hours each way)
It was my first MK1 Clio
Its a 1995 Clio Williams 3,
Brought in from england in 2005,

The uk reg was n490 gbw / n490gbw (anybody know anything about it??)

Only 103,000 miles on her
Hasn't been driven in two/three years

Thats how the car looked when I brought it home.
Emptied out a shed at the grandmothers so I could work on the car out of the cold/rain

Ripped the engine out the next week to do the timing belt, alternator belt and water pump.Got a Rocker cover gasket too.
Also new elf engine, gearbox oil, filter and coolant everything bought at Renault

While the engine was out I took the starter and alternator to boherbue(Cork) to get them refurbushed,Nothing wrong with them but would just like them running spot on......
I also dont fancy trying to take them out while the engine is in the car....

The starter was perfect but the alternator is rubbing a part inside when its turning and its overcharging.

So I "borrowed" a refurbushed alternator off the brother :D

Went spraying parts then to have the car looking nicer
2wqs4xx.jpg

2uhpy5v.jpg

  1. [*=center]I resprayed the bonnet vent and scuttle panel in black.
[*=center]1,Conor(the brother) sprayed the rocker cover gold(thanks conor)
It was silver and was flaking badly.

  1. [*=center]New renault battery.
[*=center]Changed all the water hose clips to jubilee clips.
[*=center]About 55% of the interior bulbs were gone so changed them.
So when I went to the garage today I put all the interior back that I had out from the bulbs.
Since I'm a "professional" painter now
I sprayed the black cover for the engine mount, the inlet plastic cover,
I've these given 1 coat now, must give them another coat in the morning
347bhhj.jpg

Also did this to the car...
Original headlight bulbs:
2iu6wj6.jpg

New dims..(well technically dim ;) )
w6p6px.jpg

2qmmg0m.jpg

Here's what they will look like during the day with no lights on.
v42kia.jpg

Resprayed the omp strut brace,
e71cu9.jpg

Didn't like the gold though .....
I thought it was too much.

Brought the car up home then to go in for a full respray,
2gw89zd.jpg

16lfl6r.jpg

Then at the resprayers,
s2rv9j.jpg

The car was gone for 3 months then....
Bought these,

I bought this off Fab(a member off another Clio site)
24liv89.jpg

35n530m.jpg

It's a blueflame SS exhaust(2K miles done)
€437 + postage new...
Bought for €50:D

It looks pretty much the same as the exhaust that came with the car?
3005tfm.jpg

The tip is slightly different though...

Got this off a friend in Meath(Ireland) then,
Swapped him 172 parts for it.
jkjg90.jpg

2jczzhz.jpg

I thought it was a homemade decat but it's actually a "devil" decat.
It's modded so it will fit 1.8/2.0 down pipes.
Devil made the "group N" rally exhaust systems!!

2505df4.jpg

I have a sweet silenced decat I got with my valver but it won't fit
Pity as they are expensive to buy
hst8oz.jpg

33yl3xf.jpg

Got the car back from the respray,
34zdrwn.jpg

35iro92.jpg

The next day,
2ag0ln5.jpg

Painted the brake calipers,
mmwpl.jpg

Booked the NCT/mot and it failed on,

  1. [*=center]Tracking,
    [*=center]2 ball joints,
    [*=center]Emissions.

Not bad for a car that wasn't used for 3/4 years
The emissions were 8.30%:S (anything over 0.30% is a fail)
So did the tracking and ball joints and took the car out the road to clear out the exhaust

It passed the NCT later that week.
The emissions were 0.02% !!!
Decatted the car straight away.
29kwajs.jpg

Fitted a couple of new parts,

  1. [*=center]172 rear calipers and 172 handbrake cables
    [*=center]New thermostat.
Parked the car in the grandmothers shed for the winter,
I begain stripping the car to fit new gaskets :)
5555555555555555555555555555555.jpg

Image094.jpg

Got these off my main man 16v_paddy.

These are PTFE gaskets(reuseable unlike Renaults paper gaskets  )
The rocker cover gasket at Renault are €42 trade price
So bought the rocker cover, throttle body and inlet manifold gasket for €93

The car at the moment,
fw58qx.jpg

To get the inlet manifold off was a pig of a job!
I needed to remove...
Bonnet,radiator,alternator,coolant pipes,injectors,loom.
The bolts underneath were a right fecker to get at with the power steering.
I should of removed it but I didn't want to be cleaning it up.

The inlet:
2pzw3nk.jpg

I cleaned the inlet out with "gunk"(from halfords)

Also bought this during the week off Mr. schakle,
watertank5.jpg

Here are my plans for the car now,

  1. [*=center]Fit a front cold air feed pipe to the front bumper
2w6fc0m.jpg

(Where the red circle is)

  1. [*=center]Get alloys resprayed or powdercoated
[*=center]Fit a 4th mount from a 172 to it(I have it ready to go on)
ng4ym0.jpg

(never came fitted to MK1 Clios)

So thats the car so far :D
So a recap....
The "mods" on the williams are
1,Kent cams
WilliamsCams009.jpg

2,Kent vernier cam pulleys.
2na3foz.jpg

3,Devil decat.
4,Stainless steal exhaust system
5,Remapped.
6,172 rear brake calipers
7,ABS module removed(the last owner)

I think the biggest change I made to the car is the engine bay since I got it...
From this....
ac4xly.jpg

To looking like this before I started ripping it apart for winter...
qntitx.jpg

Well thats my car 11 months on

The only thing I'm not sure on is the strut brace...!?!?!

What do ye think?
Or any suggestions on a colour?

Re: The litte willy that swam across the water...

Haven't updated in a while...:nono:

So here goes...
january 2013:

Started making a newish exhaust manifold for the car :)
IMAG0132.jpg

Its a 172 manifold with the flange cut off and a williams flange welded on.
IMAG0130.jpg

Here is a picture comparing the two exhausts,
On the left is a 172 one.....on the right is a williams one.

I have the willliams flange on a 172 manifold currently "tacked" together(spot welded)
Must get it properly welded though.
This fella is welding it for me,

He builds most rally cars from around the area.

March 2013:
Can anybody say.....
Bbbrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap

45mm Jenvey throttle bodies bought :)

April 2013:
Sence I had the car ripped up to remove the inlet manifold and exhaust.....
I was thinking of ripping the engine out and doing ALL the gaskets to have the car 300% for the jenveys

Ripped the engine out monday(25th)...
Had a bad day....

I forgot to rip one of the coolant hoses.........that goes into the heater matrix

I broke that.....so dash out job:mad:

THEN.....
Put a scratch on the front bumper from some part of the engine..
(bad day ):quiet:

Went up to Galway,Ireland(2hrs drive each way) Monday night for a 2.0 Williams engine
Got a text about it at 5.....I was out the door at 5.55 lol!!

Made my day seem better anyway.
It was a bare engine(head split from the block)

The owner bought it for a spare from a rally car.
Was kept in a shed for 4 years!!
He had a sweet V6 Clio(first time ever seeing one ) and a Williams

Found out 2 days later that there's racing cams in it ha ha
Piper 270's(pretty similar to my Kent Rn2002's)

Just cams no vernier pulleys though

Looking a bit rusty...
So I bought some Holts engine paint for €9
2zfr0a9.jpg

First coat of paint,
2441kbr.jpg

Then last Friday(the 29th) I got a friend/Renault mechanic to do all the gaskets in the engine

Found nothing in the oil pump
Found that the valve springs in the head....were doubled
1zyikk2.jpg

wkjxus.jpg

Got sick of the ****ty alternator in the car...
(70 watts only......low watts on the dash when the lights were on)

So I went checking what othe alternators would fit
172 alternator half fitted but needed a bit of work

Tried fitted the meggy f7r(same engine as williams) alternator and it fitted 98%!!!

I had to grind the top mount back like 3/4 mm.

Need to get a longer alternator belt for some reason!?!?!
The meggy one is 110amps compared to 70/90 amps

Checked compression on the engine before I ripped it down...

195-190-190-195 psi,

Good healthy numbers

Around 150psi is suppose to be good!!

Last week:

Bought a new longer alternator belt for the car.
So I've all the auxiliary parts on the car now :)
The original alternator had 1 external fan to keep it "cool"..
The new one has 2 internal fans :win
(for anyone that doesn't know about alternators....internal > external)

Since the engine was painted...
The gearbox was looking a bit grubby :(
(This is a gearbox from a PH1 172)
(Ph1 gearboxes have longest gear ratio's out of the Clio range(MK1/MK2)
(PH2/182's have shorter ones)
(this is after the gearbox has been washed/cleaned :( )
2im5e0j.jpg

263dhxh.jpg

lfc7p.jpg

Gearbox model is "JC5 089" :)
(089 is the ph1 part)
2ii9ws6.jpg

Doing a couple of parts black
(4th mount, clutch release arm, box extension arm, the "end cap"(end of the 'box in black/rust in the first picture)

Also rang some lad the uk today to build me a engine loom :)

So I need to.....
Buy a loom in the uk and ship it to him(40/45£???)
(Buying a loom as I want to keep my original one)
Send him the ecu "plug" (need to cut it off the 206 loom)
(or buy one for £80....:look)

Cost is £150 + a small bit more(30£ ?) depending on what senors/plugs I need)

(the loom will be plug and play.... ie connects up the standard interior car loom)

This week:
2im5e0j.jpg

5vnafb.jpg

343i621.jpg

Finished the gearbox :)
(Also added a new mount on the gearbox)
(Never came with mk1 Clios)

I MIGHT..... of got carried away with the spraying :D
Also painted....
Two driveshafts,
gearbox bolts,
1 Wishbone,
1 Shock.

Must do the other wishbone and shock :)

Also I should be fitting 172 front brakes this week or next week :)
(280mm vs 259mm)
(max under 15" alloys is 285mm)
Bit of work getting them fitted but cheaper then buying bigger brakes from the uk.

Brilliant mate, always love seeing older projects being restored!

I'd love a williams.

I bet that's going to sound immense. I know my Williams with the just the feed removed from the airbox sound good on full chat.

Great project mate, will keep an eye out for progress
Thanks lads :)
I bet that's going to sound immense. I know my Williams with the just the feed removed from the airbox sound good on full chat.
Do you mean with the throttle bodies or the manifold??
Or both ;)

With the 172 exhaust manifold I'm making I need to make some room for it...
Would fit fine if I got rid of power steering...
But there's no fun doing it the easy way ;)
standard 172 manifold goes out between the sub frame and the bulk head,
ouwrx5.jpg

Standard valver/Williams exhaust goes under the sub frame.
The power steering pipe is in my way for the 172 manifold :banghead:
2h4yu8j.jpg

What I did today was...
Get a megane 2.0(clio williams engine) power steering pipe(a bit different to the clio pipes)
Bent it a small bit so it fits behing the heat shield better)
kdx4wo.jpg

Looks like I have to remove the clutch cable/mount at the back of the sub frame:(
So I've no idea what way I'm going to route it now:rolleyes:
(didn't really look yet..)
Or would wrapping the clutch cable in tin foil be okay?

Also need to use the 172 anti roll bar with the manifold.

Should be putting new bearings in the 172 front brakes in a day or two :)
I can fit them then :D
(280mm discs vs 259mm)

  225 Cup & Williams
I mean with the bodies fitted to yours and the standard manifold and airbox on my Williams mate lol.

Looking forward to the finished article.

Fitted a full 172 steering rack yesterday :)
It's a quicker rack lock to lock...
(172 is 2 and 1/4 turns)
(Valver/Williams is 2 and 3/4 turns)
(also no dodgy looking ps pipes ;) )

Also fitted a 172 anti roll bar,
9izsav.jpg

The one with a "hump" at the back is a 172 one :)
Its 23mm thick(same as a Williams)

The last owner of the car removed the abs pump and just joined the brake lines where the pump was.
It looked messy though so I removed the abs brake pipes and the abs brake servo(2 ports)

They come out from the bulk head and come out towards the gearbox where they join each other.
ifokqo.jpg

I fitted non abs brake pipes and non abs brake servo(4 ports)
They look a lot better.they run from the bulk head and go to each arch :)

Since I was at the brake lines....wouldn't you know they started rounding :(
So I bought a "open spanner" I liked it so much I bought a second one the same size lol 2x€5 :)
hwzpt3.jpg

It's twice as thick as a normal spaner so less chance of it rounding :D

Got a front and rear set of braided brake lines for the car also :)
Didn't think the car had rear brake lines!!(non metal ones)
Fitted the rear braided brake lines :)

Last Monday I went to Cork,Ireland(45 minute drive each way) to buy a 2.0 engine and box :)
Turns out though it was a 1.8 :(
Bought a 2.0 jc5 williams gearbox with 67,000 miles!!

Your man had a sweet Williams 2 with ZERO rust!!!
Still on original paint and garaged every night!!

Bought a engine loom off mat brown:)
So getting it shipped to beanies place next week to make a plug and play itb's loom :D

6th of June;

Cut my timing belt cover today
My thinking was for whoever will be mapping the car.........he can a just the cams whatever way they want.
Easier then taking off the timing cover in the engine bay anyway!!
Standard cam pulleys
2njbwid.jpg

Kent pulleys :)
2yoborq.jpg

Complete engine
m96clw.jpg

I'm short 1 bolt on the right pulley :(
To get at it the engine has to crank/turn over.
(picture is taken TDC)
Can't cut anymore as the engine mount is blocking it :(

I love angle grinders:win
(not the sparks though!! :( )
Thinking about spraying another timing cover black for the car :)

Bought these a while ago,
33dffwh.jpg

Brembo 4 pots (4 pistons)
Wasn't sure to keep them black or go for red,
Going painting them red :)
Not sure to get a black or white brembo sticker!?!?!

Since my car is still in bits I wanted to see what they looked like so I fitted them to Conors Clio :)
After seeing them fitted I didn't like them black.

To fit the brembos I need,
Two 3mm washers where the caliper meets the hub,
15mm spacers.

I just took the spacers off the rear of Clios Clio lol, Thank god he is in oz :)
free spacers ftw!!
These are original 259mm brakes,
28mcjcw.jpg

These are 280mm 172 discs,
1zohqxl.jpg

any7fo.jpg

I can fit 285mm(off a Renault 21 I think) brakes but I have new 172 ones so I'll use them for now :)

It's soooo easy to change the brake pads! I'd say you could change them in 40 seconds with the wheel off!!
Just pull out a pin, lift old pads out & drop new ones in. No need for taking the caliper off :)

My engine loom got shipped Thursday from Beanie so should be putting the engine in this week if it all goes well :)
2meoeoi.jpg

05/09/13;

Very long week waiting for the engine loom :(
Fitted the gearbox to the engine today :)
3523pds.jpg

Also fitted a 172 starter and a metal coolant pipe tonight,
Tomorrow evening hopefully I'll get to fit the thermostat housing and also the coolant pipes(all the hoses are still connected to the thermostat so I don't have to find about 5 different hose's around the place ;) )
Hopefully engine loom will be here tomorrow :D

The pipe on the left goes from the bottom of the engine to the inlet manifold for suport..
Since I'm using a different inlet manifold I cut down a sprayed it black :)
28iwyog.jpg

06/09/13;

Sanded the inside of the inlet manifold today...
Before;
ne886x.jpg

rbejwj.jpg

Its weld from the company that made it...
I thought they'd have it some bit clean before sending it out!!
After;
nevxcm.jpg

Looking some bit better anyway :)
Must get some smoother sand paper tomorrow to finish it off!
Took about 3 hours

10/11/13
Fitted the engine loom today....
Than went to fit the manifold so I could put the engine in....

For some reason I couldn't get the manifold gasket to close the gap...
abkr2c.jpg

:dead::drunk:
Sent it back to pepper performance for them to sort it out.....
(still haven't received it back :( 02/12/13 )

2s61rte.jpg

My anti roll bar bushes...
Williams - 172 - powerflex :D
Look where the bar fits into on the williams and 172...
Slight difference ;)
The williams also passed the nct/mot 10 miles ago with that bush.. :S

Anyway....
I got purple powerflex bushes arb and wishbone bushes on "easyway payments"
(AKA...Conor(the brother) bought them........but he is in oz for a few years :butt: )
I've the arb already removed to fit them...
But I must remove the wishbones again

Changed my mind on the 172 manifold...
So last saturday I swapped back the steering rack,
So now running a williams rack instead of a 172 one,

Basically I'll be able to get the car up and running faster as I wont have to take the car on a trailer to someone to make a cat/decat...
Aka...use the original cat/decat.

So sanded the williams arb during the week and primed and painted,
Should be fitting it tomorrow :)
2n9etw.jpg

2v3saoo.jpg

Also I had newish 172 Renault brake discs ready to go on the car....

But I seen these and thought they'd look class with the Brembos...
I was right :D
2n8o86f.jpg

K-tec racing drilled and grooved discs,
Bought them for the front and the rear of the car!

Also bought this...
Instead of buying powerflex bushes for €60ish delievered
I found these on K-tec,
picture_2220_f.jpg

http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=4808&appid=2

The company that make them for K-tec ;)
MK1&Ph1 172 mount
PH2 172
PH2 172

Or in the traders section here :)

Nice price difference ;)

I bought the MK1&ph1 172 mount instead of a powerflex bushes because this was £25 cheaper tbh :)
(Also replacement bushes are only £8 compared to new powerflex ones €60ish)
Also it's new out so no harm in trying it!
Recieved mine in the post last week :D
155mh02.jpg

Thanks,

Yep a nice ph1 172 box(jc5 089)
It has 65,xxx miles on it :)
No crunches,
Had it in my 172 since 2009 before fitting it to the willy in 2012 :)

I also have two Williams boxes as spares!
One on 68,000 and the other on 103,000 miles(Jc5 014)
Hopefully I won't need them ;)

I fitted the arb to the car today with purple powerflex bushes :D
wvy61f.jpg

I should be painting the brembo's red tomorrow :)
Need to order some stickers for it now(not sure to get white or black...so I'll order both)

Cheers buddy :)

The loom was originally a Williams loom...
With the ecu connector cut off and my new ecu connector soldered on,
Few connections altered(throttle postion sensor added + more)
Cost £35 for the Williams loom posted to Beanies places and £175 delivered to Ireland :)

Can get pictures if you want?

Sanded and painted my Brembo's :D
2n864ww.jpg

Took about 5 coats of paint to get rid of the black!!

2pyam1g.jpg

2jc688y.jpg

I've Brembo stickers bought and just waiting to fit them,
I bought black and white colours...
I'm thinking the black will look nice :)

Upon fitting the Disc's and calipers...
I noticed that the passenger side wheel bearing is gone :(

Think Renault are 60 Sterling each for the front bearings :(
I think I might see how good the bearing is in Conors Blue Clio ;)

Amazing work
Really nice car mate love it!

Is it me or is that disc the wrong way round?

Got my manifold back from pepper,
It was warped again:S
Also it had NO brake servo ports!!!
(so the brakes wouldn't work......)

Sent it back and I'm getting a refund :)
(I hope)
Found some fella here that makes manifolds :)
He lives about 40 minutes away and it'll be made from aluminium instead of steel(pepper)

Had a busy week buying parts;
Bought some new braided hoses :)
Theirs plastic over braided part so it won't rub/wear on anything.
2d9ahyr.jpg

Bought 4 stainless steel bleed nipple's for the Brembo brake calipers,
Also bought 4 dust covers for the nipples..
Originally they came with brembo stamped on them so had to get them ones again ;)
€30 posted for the bleed nipples and covers :(

1 of the dust covers was broken and 1 of the threads on the bleed nipples was a bit dodgy(mild steel also!)
So I said I'll order everything so I wouldn't get caught for postage again! ;)
25q7ypg.jpg

K-tec racing stainless steel silenced cat, €135 for this fecker!

I was kinda sick of the swapping the whole cat/de-cat with the nct!
Lifetime warrenty also :D
1z6s9l5.jpg

I'm looking for a 4 branch manifold and downpipe for the car now :)
(if ye have one let me know ;) )

I should be getting my new inlet manifold in about 2 weeks :)

Bwdad38.jpg

I got the Manifold last night :D

Also bought a pipercross airfilter holder(no air filter yet...) off the fella.
He is drilling the holes for the trumpets this week

Gonna try and fit the engine this week or next week.
Must just change the starter from 172 to willy.

Also must wire in the oil sensor as my loom is missing it(itbs loom not original)
So must check to see is there one on a old loom around the place :(

25fli5f.jpg

Didn't get a chance to do much today :(

Changed the accelerator linkage from left pull to right,
Fitted the throttle bodies to the engine with a new ptfe inlet gasket.
9se9md.jpg

nlzuyp.jpg

Plan tomorrow is maybe fit the power steering and alternator and try and fix the wiring loom :)

  X2 Clio Valvers

2meoeoi.jpg

Also. What car are the callipers from?

18/06/2014
femcmc.jpg

Done a nice bit today,
Only had 1 engine mount and a crane holding the engine up for like 2 months
confused0083.gif
wtf.gif

Today I fitted;
Gearbox mount,
Removed the 172/4th mount as it was hitting power steering pipe
frown.gif

Fitted fuel lines(feed works..must extend the return pipe though)
A new polybushed dogomunt(not a powerflex one....)
My new K-tec Silenced cat,
Downpipe,
Drivers side driveshaft,
New stainless steel bleed nipples(4 of them) for my brembos(1 old nipple had a dodgy thread)
2 front braided hose lines for the brembos,
A few coolant hoses(no shorter radiator bought yet
frown.gif
)

New oil filter and oil poured in(hoping to have it cranking tomorrow
smile.gif
)

This is cool! Any more progress with it? I'm wanting to go 172 widetrack on my valver. Keep up the good work mate
very nice looking car mate will look good with the throttle bodies hooked up
Thanks :)
Also. What car are the callipers from?
Peugeot 406 2.2 diesel and 3.0 v6 petrol
