  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
just been on to renault in durham and got a one day only deal for tomorrow for the 72k service and a cam belt change, with the full kit, pulley's and aux belt for 500 quid, this sounds like a good deal to me, am i right?

get that done thats a very good price indeed.
Spark plugs are 15 quid each from the dealer, cambelt kit is 123 not to mention all the other parts get it booked in.

going in first thing in the morning, told her that over 800 for both the 72k service and cam belt kit was way too much, so i said i spoke to a load of people on here and told her what prices other dealerships in the uk were charging (might have told a little white lie) and she said a one day only deal so its in getting sorted, gotta love cliosport, thanks guy's

m8 get a grip and stop taking your car to the main dealers, its out of warrenty so why? you could get all that done for about £250 at a normal garage which would do just as good a job if not better and look after your car more. STOP WASTING MONEY

I wouldn't take a 172/182 for a cambelt to be done at any gaage loads of places have messed up i te past even good garages if they havn't done it before and don't have the Renault tools forget it.

I just had my cambelt done on my 5 year old 172,also got the alternator belt changed and front discs and pads for £420,from my not so local garage, who used to work for Renault, now that is a bargin, compared to what Renault wanted £740 ,exc VAT.

£250 for a cambelt on 172? yes its feasable but theywill use a powertrain cambelt kit (£60) and gates aux belt i would always use genuine renault parts

I'd have to agree...my experience of the way main dealers treat customers cars isn't good and they always try and makes sales on s**t you don't need.

I got quoted over £600 for the cambelt change on my 172....I will not be taking my car to the dealers for sure.

I would by a good cambelt kit from GDI for about £120 and get a good, reputable local garage to fit it.

Your choice at the end of the day

Like I said, my experience of dealers hasn't been good so I may be biased.

Id buy the belt and stuff from renault, then take it somewhere else to be done. You dont need special tools or anything, changing a cambelt is exactly the same on and 16v car. Any competent mechanic can do it.

mmmm have to disagree a bit mate...there are special tools to lock the camshafts up..and...the crank is freewheeling so you could get it ALL wrong if not carefull.

m8, if my auntie had b****cks shed be me uncle lol, people used to say this stuff when i had a VTS, kept tellin me in needed a special tensioner, this, that. In the end, i took it a local garage, got the job done half of what it would have cost, and the car was perfect. Its ok to take it to renault, if ur loaded.

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
well lucky for me i am,(loaded) but if i thought i could get it done to the same standard at another garage cheaper, then i would, but for the fact i have just bought it and it needed doing, thought it might as well get it done from dealer.

The amount of garages who messed up and either wrote the engine off or made the cars the slowest 172/182 in history is quite amazing.

  a burnt one
not had my car long , its a 1.2 if that makes any difference, why the hell is it so dear to fit a timing belt??

on my last car, (mk6 escort) i bought the belt for £15 and took it to a garage who fitted it in an hour, was £45 altogether

why are people quoting £400 plus, are they taking a month to fit it?
are the belts gangsta style thick gold/(gold plated)

someone please fill me in here

it only has 3 spanners on a haynes manual:approve: , meaning, it surely does not need a renault garage with all singing all dancing 'special' tools to fit it

but i got mine done by non main dealer for £280. been a month now and no probs so why pay the extra for a fancy stamp?
the guy i took mine does renault 5 turbo engine rebuilds so hes no lemon!
but yeah for main dealer that cheap

Special tools.....you could probably make them up with some steel and welder.

The 1.2 is easy smalle engine the 172 is a bigger engine by miles its a paint to do there no space.
Cambelt kit also included tentioners which need to be done toherwsie that can fail and so you've got to stip it all down to chnage them so no pont trying to save a few quid just swopping belts.
5 hour job depending on model etc.

wow got my service report back, needs new back box and mid section, front suspension thingy on the top, new pads front, new tyre on spare, nail in tyre,
got 1 month warrenty with the car, can i expect the garage to pay for some of this?
i just paid 500 for the service and belts.

I woult try for the suspension and the exhaust but I'd think they'd refuse both claims.
Exhaust are a common failing popular is the aftermarket stuff as replacment.
Top mounts easy to change and not to pricy.
New pads are £55 from Yozzasport and pads well standard Renault are £40 or so going upto about £130 from DS3000 pads.
