77k dephaser

I don't think they have service intervals for the dephaser usually they are more prone to going if the car hasn't had frequent oil changes.

As said, the dephaser is NOT on the service schedule - the cambelt (full kit with tensions and aux belt and tensioners) are due every 72k or 5 years, which ever comes first, and the aux belt is due every 36k.

The dephaser is not required to be changed, and gets noisy due to owners missing oil changes - it only requires changing once it gets noisy.

for reference, my balck ph1 (in my avatar pic) was sold on 144k and still on the original dephaser.

Ok so it was last done 2011, 77k now nearly 96k,
I'm guessing every 5 years

Its due when it gets noisy, it doesn't have to be replaced in a certain timeframe or mileage. A lot of people get theirs replaced when they do the cambelt as if it does go then you need to remove the cambelt to replace it which would mean its a £600 job. So for the sake of the cost of a dephaser they just do it along with the cambelt which is every 5 years.

Don't panic lol. Listen to what Russ16v said above:)

Providing oil changes are kept on top of i can see a dephaser last an extremely long time...

It does not need changing at every belt service!

I am on my 3rd belt 85k and no rattle from the dephaser and if i still have for the next 2 year and the belt due I might change it .

Ok, I'm unsure when the Cambelt was done, guessing at 77k...

do you have a receipt for it at all? No one in their right mind would change a dephaser without doing a belt.

If it doubt just get the belt changed, does your cup have air con? If not it is pretty cheap to have done

No air con...

The receipt states supplied and fitted timing belt.... At 77k

so you have done 19K miles, you have another 13K miles you can do before the aux belt needs to be done (provided it was done at the same time as the cambelt) and 53K miles before the cambelt needs to be done. Or if you dont do those miles by the year 2016, then you will need to get them done then regardless of millage. the dephaser never need to be done unless it has gotten noisy (ie. sound like a proper old diesel taxi), but this wont happen if you change the engine oil every 10K or so. even if it does get noisy, it wont brake. There is yet to be a single dephaser unit that has imploded and caused damage iirc.

now stop panicking and post some sexy picture's of yourself to say thankyou :p:)

just make sure you have a receipt for the full 'aux belt kit' being replaced at or around 77K, else I would recommend getting that done just to be on the safe side as it will take out the cambelt if it fails. its much cheaper than cambelt/dephaser etc.

Just the belt, no air con = no kit.

I recommend getting the aux belt done for peace of mind if there are no records of it being done. Take it to a specialist and they will give everything a quick look over to make sure its all ok for you as well if you ask nicely ;)

There's a sticky in the Engine thread with youtube clips and videos of what your car sounds like when the dephaser is on it's way out, usually it will be quite rattly on idle and then when you rev to about 2k the noise will die down, if you rev on and off it will make a sort of scraping noise, like it's struggling to go into gear, even in neutral it will make this noise. Your best bet is to listen for it, if there's no noise it's probably fine. When the next belt is changed, get the dephaser changed for piece of mind :) if it was done at 72k, I should expect to see 120k before the next belt or 5 years from the last belt change

The only reason why people panic about the dephaser pulley is it involves a full expensive cam belt job if it starts to go so most replace at cambelt time purely for future peace of mind.

I got 120k out of mine also.

I didn't do my dephaser at my cam belt change its not something that 'has' to be done but on my next cambelt change I will do both

The only reason people panic about the dephaser is because of CS lol.

Keep the car serviced properly and it will be fine IMO. I service or atleast change the oil every six months or after every trackday.
