98 Ron Remap running 97 octane fuel??

Hi Guys,

I am finding it increasingly hard when I do track days to find 98 octane fuel or over as my 172 is running the 98 remap. Is it OK to run the car on 97 octane instead, still classed as super unleaded but advertised as 97? The nearest petrol station to brands hatch is texaco who claim they have super unleaded.

Just use Tesco momentum 99, there's Tesco garages everywhere these days and they all supply it.

I'll venture half an answer.... my Golf should only be run on 98RON (label in the filler cap) but I've had no issues using 97 on occasion.

Op wants to use 98 ron as his car is mapped on 98. yeah sure 97 or less will be okay, that's fine.

I think you'll be fine OP. Even the Rstuner map file name was changed to 97 ron + but Henk said it was still the same.

Mine is on the 98Ron map and i have ran it on 95 before and it's been fine. I wouldn't do it all the time.

Filling up a few cans on the way to the track is hardly effort is it.

I managed to test 95vs99 ron a few years back in the most reliable way I could without having a lab - basing it on top end speed on a (private) road over multiple occasions. The top end was consistently 5-7mph faster using 99 ron. This was over 2 years of having the car in the same state of tune and tested about 10 times for each fuel using a GPS reading for speed.

Thats 95 to 99 tho! Not 98 to 97

A modern ECU factory map 'should' be able r****d the ignition timing to prevent engine knock when lower octane fuel is used, and advance the timing once it sees more desirable fuel again, no issues there. Is this the same once the basic off the shelf 98ron map has been uploaded (presuming it has the RStuning 98ron map) Probably not as the ignition timing has been advance specifically to use 98ron or above fuel so using a lower octane fuel could lead to increased engine knock as the ECU cant r****d the ignition timing to suit, and the last thing you want whist thrashing your car about for hours on end is unnecessary engine knock whether you can feel it or not.

OP its your car and you do as you please but me personally wouldn't take that risk all for the sake of a 12 mile round trip for fuel.

I've been running my 98ron mapped car on 97ron for 7 years, never had a single problem with the engine. It's runs like sh*t on 95ron though, only done that 2 or 3 times because I was in arsehole of nowhere and needed fuel.

Just take a couple of jerry cans with you on trackdays. Job done then and never have to worry about it again.

If my car was 'mapped' to 98 then I personally wouldn't use anything but 98+. I'm sure it might be fine but I wouldn't want to risk it.

My car is mapped on 99 and I only ever put Vpower in it.

Thanks Guys, decided to add only £5 of 97 to top up however the majority of the fuel was Shell Super, Ill make sure I get a jerry can using tesco fuel
