I found this after searching before doing exactly the same investigation into fixing my boot light... here's what I did -
Firstly, I checked if there was 12V getting to the boot light plug (it sounds like there isn't on yours, based on the new bulb, but best not to assume). I checked mine with a multimeter and 0V was the result.
I then decided to check the boot catch and wiring and had to pop off the rear pannel (1x Torx by the 'handle') and then the catch (2x larger Torx bolts). There's a white plug on the RHS of the bootlid (behind the pannel) that's connected to the boot catch wiring and so I checked the continuity of the catch with it in the open and closed positions - result: no difference (when the boot is closed, the circuit should be open and vice versa).
Upon inspection, the wiring to the microswitch on the boot catch had corroded and sheared off at the microswitch terminal. This was a relatively simple fix: I removed the old solder and debris; removed the second wire; cut the insulation back a little and tinned the wires and then soldered everything the way it should be.
Put it all back together and a quick check of the bulb holder showed that I now had 12V. The result should have been happiness but like you, I had no boot light despite a little effort... However, I'd noticed that the boot light was an LED item (as fitted when I bought the car) and so based on the nature of diodes, I flipped it round and all was well.
Took a bit of time to figure it all out but it all works now and the central locking is a lot happier too. Hope it is of some help to you too.
