A decent garage in surrey to help check and set up timing after cambelt change....

  172cup
Hi all,

Yep here goes what looks like another bodged cambelt! Was recommended a garage on here and im not happy with the work. Ive had the cambelt changed to pick it up a over the weekend, the clio was making an awful rattle and running VERY lumpy on idle. Took it straight back after driving about 10metres!

Chap has phoned me today to say its sorted, I am going tomorrow to pick it up. He has told me you cannot adjust the timing on these engines unless its linked to a laptop.... This hasnt left me with any confidence whatsoever and have a feeling its still going to be running poorly.

Is there anyone who can check timing and adjust? If so what costs am i looking at?

Am I right in thinking you can adjust the timing on the left hand side of the block?

Also the spark plugs where changed, i got bosch plugs from halfrauds, anychance these could even be the cause?!

All help much appreciated!

I have never done a cup cambelt but i find it very unlikely that you "cannot adjust the timing on these engines unless its linked to a laptop" !

Re plugs you need NGK PFR6E-10, the wrong ones can cause issues. So they changed the plugs at the same time then?

You are getting your leg lifted. That laptop line is complete b****cks. Do not drive the car under any circumstance.

Who in Croydon told you that about the laptop????? Do NOT drive the car imo. Take it to Michael Woodford who is the closest specialist to you (see the traders section) and have them do the timing and give you a report.

If he won't give you your money back take him to small claims you'll have him over a barrel by the sounds of it.

Also as above ONLY use NGK PFR6E-10

DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR.

it sounds like a moron has worked on your car for a start, second, you have put bosch plugs in when you can only run the F4R's properly on NGK PFR6E - 10 plugs.

the lap top line is the biggest load of bull i have ever heard so the mech who has worked on your car cant now what he is doing.

also if the timing is out, the pistons could be clipping the valves which could lead to catastrophic engine failure.

go get your money back and get the car trailered to a reputable specialist.

Really? Which garage and who recommended them?
Surely no-one on here would have recommended a garage where a tech has said you can only adjust timing on an F4R with a laptop!

There is a specialist in Sevenoaks that'd do it for you if you can get the car there. Ren7Oaks.

LOL at changing timing on a laptop.

I'm remapping my car tonight- has anyone got an impact gun I can borrow?

Yer pretyy annoyed right now, I always do my own mechanics but didnt fancy this! And the one time I use a mechanic they screw me over! Who do you time these engines correctly? what is the procedure? Is there a chance these plugs could be fouling and causing the issues too?

i guess the plugs could be a fault causing the crap running, it wont explain the rattle though.

Have you spoke to the "adjust timing via laptop" guy? what has he said???

Spoken to him rattle sorted, but im not convinced timing has been set properly! Before I go I want to know the procedure to adjust timing, so I can explain to him a laptop isnt the way forward!! I will be visiting him later today...Not feeling confident here. Maybe chuck the old plugs in to rule this out too...

I still wouldn't drive it...trailer it to a specialist, seriously.

Just done a bit of research. Maybe its the sh$tty bosch plugs causing the issues! Going to get NGKs as the car was idling crap almost like a missfire. Which could indicate the plugs!! Gona give this guy a chance as he has done a few before... Keep you updated and thanks for help so far.

Do you know if he has the correct tools to set the timing? You should ask to see them. I think it is a "C" shaped tool.
Without them, it is unlikely it will be timed correctly even if any rattle or idle improves with NGK plugs.

Re: A decent garage in surrey to help check and set up timing after cambelt change...

The guy has got all the correct tools. Not genuine though which would be an issue... The rattle has been sorted. I was concerned with the rough idle. I have ordered some NGKs so will try give them a try. If not job will be going elsewhere.

Re: A decent garage in surrey to help check and set up timing after cambelt change...

He was quite clearly talking about the ignition timing being computer adjustable as the engine doesn't have a distributor or similar. Still......

Re: A decent garage in surrey to help check and set up timing after cambelt change...

Update, been to garage they have tried to fob me off, and tell me its def not the timing.. I have a spare engine at home, so have changed throttle body, injectors, put a new inlet mani gasket, new NGK plpugs and low and behold the engine is still idling crap and cutting out!!!!

Booked in a ren7oaks to have it looked at! Ive had it on my mates snap on diagnostic and its not thrown any codes...

Bee interestinig to see what the outcome on wends...Keep you guys posted!
